Hey guys, I want to post these here rather than the ShopTalk forum because I figure you all have a good idea what you like, specifically with regard to slip joint knives.

Which one should I make next?

I'm liking numbers 3 and 1 the best.

Which do you all like?

The second and third knife patterns are very classic. I think you should make the second one... and give it to me. :p just teasing. Being super critical: I'm not sure about the match between the handle and blade geometry for #1. I would suggest a handle more similar to a "New England Whaler" or a Case "Loom Fixer" (see quote below). The handle may have too much belly??? I like the blade and handle separately but not so much together... of course, this is just a sketch and I could completely change my opinion when I see the knife... or when the tide changes... or...

Jason, that's the strongest evidence I've heard so far that the name has a reasonable origin! It certainly sounds reasonable!!
Here's another picture of one, in red bone.

I agree with Jake on the first one, I'd change the handle up.

Make #3 and send it my way, I'll let you know how it does this hunting season. :D

I've always been a fan of the SBJ, but that first one is calling my name, maybe take the hump down a little and turn it into a sheepsfoot, kind of a mariner saddlehorn if you will?

Hey guys. Here is an updated sketch of number 1, also sketches of 1, 2, & 3 in the closed positions.

I had never heard of a whaler pattern. I looked it up and man, that pattern really spoke to me.

That #2 looks fantastic.

What materials did you have in mind for the blade and handle?

If my opinion matters, I'll vote for the original #1 and sink the joint.
Oh, and thanks for posting this. It is cool to see your designs.

Johnny, not yet. It's headed to heat treat after final sanding. Hopefully tomorrow. I'm just enjoying designing now. Trying to find a new pattern. I love making these things!

Nickel silver liner and bolster. Maybe ivory paper micarta or some kind of horn. Elephant or mammoth ivory would be cool later on too!

I like the blade on the original #1, but the handle is weird for me. I might go back and draw a new knife based off the original 1, and make the handle different.

I hope people enjoy them. I am really liking making them. They are challenging but fun. I need to order more steel and belts and I will get started on these patterns.

Sounds really pretty. I'd love to see some pictures once it's complete.

Do you already have it sold?

The first version or the revised version?

I prefer the revised version because the lines flow a little better for me. I prefer very clean lines and in the original I see a break between the blade and the bolster in the open position.

No, not sold. I don't know if I will be up to selling any for a while. I hold myself to a pretty high standard and won't sell here or anywhere until I'm sure my name will be associated with quality work.

I will definitely get pictures up once complete.

I'm thinking go old school on this one. Nickel silver bolster, brass liner and pins, ebony covers. True classic stuff.

I think that would turn out lovely. With clean lines and classic hardware, its pretty tough to go wrong. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Fair enough.

Can't wait to see those pictures.

Cheers.
