I was looking through Flea Bay tonight and found someone selling nine of a Zero Tolerance Rexford ZT0801 for $159. Now admittedly I am fairly knew to the collecting side of the hobby. I mostly just buy knives to use but recently I have found some blades that are just so beautiful (and expensive) that I probably wouldn't carry them. Anyway, back to this Rexford. When I don't recognize a knife, I Google it and find out what the price sold for online at release. I could be wrong here but every online retailer I found was selling it for $192. So it begs the question, why would someone be selling these cheaper than release? Was the release price lower than $159 and I got it wrong? I am always concerned about fakes but this was a seller with over 20K feedback. Just hoping to get educated here.

It's probably fine. There was a dealer or two offering it right around that price however very recently ZT initiated their MAP (minimum advertised price) policy so I believe that price is gone now.

Example: I got a brand new Benchmade Griptilian 551 off the bay for $70 but you can't find them that cheap at any online retailer. Be smart about it and you should be fine.

There's always been 0801's on there for about that price. Ever since they've been released nearly anyway. Some dealers don't mind just making a few dollars off a sale, as long as they turn a number of knives. They might get a lot of say 20 pieces and decide to move them quickly and only make 15 dollars or so each. There's nothing ZT can do about it, other than if they see the price stop selling them knives. A dealer with lots of feedback isn't very likely to put fakes up, in number because they'd get found out and ruin their reputation. The fakes I've seen on ebay are mostly being sold by people with lower feedback and not dealers that turn volume, that have great feedback.

Thanks for that info folks. I also read up a little on MAP pricing. I also do some photography and I deal with that all the time when buying photo equipment also. In any case, I was glad to get the lower price of $159 for the knife and it's my first Zero Tolerance. I absolutely love the knife. I'm also closely watching a composite 0560CBCF that I have fallen in love with.

I actually wrote to the ebay seller that I bought the knife from that I referenced in my original post. I just asked him flat out how he was able to sell the knives for so much cheaper than everyone else. Here was his reply:

"I get most of my merchandise in bulk at quick sales and or going out of business sales. With todays economy lots of businesses are reducing stock or closing."

Interesting. I wish I could find these sales. I wouldn't mind taking a shot at it.

I got mine for $165 before map hit. I'm guessing since it just hit friday? that some retailers have been slow to adjust their prices.

There are alot of small privately run, mom & pop, "outdoorsman" type shops that operate through eBay, many of which have >99.5% feedback. I pretty much exclusively buy from these sellers on eBay now. I've never had an issue. However, I know what to look for when avoiding fakes.

Right now Blade HQ has a Benchmade 940 for $182.75.
Outdoorgearbargins, with over 6,000 positive reviews over the last year (99.7%), has one listed for $153.50.

Yeah... thats a no brainer.

Everyones has their jimmies rustled over Benchmades MAP policies, but it just doesn't seem to affect eBay prices as much.

I just bought this 0801BW last week for $159, when listed at $192. A lot of times all you need to do is email the dealer and ask for their best price. Sometimes going with the little guy has its advantages.
