I have this:
refinish4.jpg

I am trying to refinish it for a friend. Only problem is that I have no idea what kind of handle it had or how to go about putting a new handle on it. So, what did it have and what would look good on it now? Was it stacked leather, some kind of wood, something else? I'd like to give it a more tactical look with some black G10 or Micarta, but I don't know if that would be possible. I don't have a lot of money to spend since I'm doing it to repay a favor.

When I got this knife, it was a chunk of rust. I managed to negate all of the rust by soaking it in vinegar for about a week. It has an awesome forced patina that I am still debating on whether or not to keep. The pommel is aluminum and the hilt is some kind of steel. The tang is .151" thick and 4.448" long, including the area covered by the pommel, without that area it is 3.979". The blade measures 5.901" from the hilt to the tip. The OAL of the knife is 10.711".

Please help, I could really use a starting point for this handle.

Please feel free to move this thread if need be.

Looks like a military issued RH-PAL, which had a stacked leather grip. Good luck, and don't forget to post the end result.

+1 g10 is a pita to work and so is micarta but its better. best way to do micarta would be to get a scale set that measure 5"x1.5"x3/8", cut to size, hollow the tang area. epoxy on and use a belt sander to contour them. leather would be easy just order some leather washers and stack em up and do the final contour and reattach the pommel

Yes, I agree with Van, a Remington model 56 or Pal maybe even a Marbles. The dimensions fit as well. With the guard extending on the top makes it after 1949. All those were stacked leather handles with 2 spacers in the front and rear. Merely procure pieces of 10oz. scrap leather, enough for 30 disc and use a piece of fencing top rail. Sharpen one end and hammer it thru the leather to make your disc. Then use a thin bladed knife to cut the centers to fit the tang. Oil then stack them on and press the pommel back in place. Some glue the disc to each other. Then shape with sand paper and reoil. DM
