my jigsaw is about to give up the ghost so I’ve been shopping around a bit for a new saw. I haven’t really paid attention to jigsaw development and noticed how much more capable they seem to have become.

Not that it’ll replace a bandsaw, but how capable are they with cutting steel when needed? Any suggestions as to specifics to look for other than slow blade speed?

They really aren't capable of cutting any amount of steel consistently. Buy a bandsaw.

I've owned a Bosch’s 1587AVSK jigsaw for 25 years, never a problem of any kind, except breaking and bending blades. (My fault always.) Their blades are the best, imo.
I've cut stainless, micarta, g10, aluminum and wood of many types. Choose the correct blade, cut steady and all goes as it should.
