Well, I'm joining the local rural volunteer fire dept and am looking for a knife that I'll be able to keep handy when responding along with being strong/tough enough to take whatever abuse it recieves.

Any ideas on a good knife???

You looking for a folder or fixed? Folder I would recommend the MOD CQD. For a fixed I would recommend a MadDog or Busse.

Price not a factor as who knows what the knife/tool will be called on to do.

I'm a thinking a folder will be easyer to carry and access if needed, and am leaning towards a Buck Strider.

If you want tough and don't want to loose a Sebenza in a hot house (kinda expensive for that), I'd think about a REKAT Carnivour or perhaps one of the Emersons. Real tough folders for hard use.

AlMar SERE 2000 would also fit the bill. All are about half a Sebenza pricewize. I carry CRK myself, but don't go into burning buildings.

I'll second that..
also get it in dual action
with the glass breaker and seatbelt/zip tie cutter.

you never know when u have to break a window or cuz a seatbelt without endangering the victim.

plus if u get dual action....u can easliy open it with one hand if need be...

i strongly reccomend it to any law enforcment, fire man, EMT.....etc

If price isnt a factor then this isnt a real decision, have to go with a Chris Reeve Sebenza, its the only option unless you go custom.

Take a look at the TOPS CQT Magnum folders, they are extremely tough and can take severe abuse...

The (2) firefighters that I know want a tough knife that they can afford to lose, and each has lost several. Their choices are Spyderco Enduras and Rescues. An axe makes a great glassbreaker :D

I'll second the Emerson suggestion. I just got a Mini-Commander and have been beating the snot outta the little guy. Keeps going just like the Energizer Bunny.

Those are all good suggestions. However, you "may" not have to go all that high in price to get what you need. While it's only a sample of one, the CRKT Pointguard (large) I bought for my
Brother-In-Law has been more than tough enough to handle his work as a volunteer firefighter.

All good choices mentioned so for.I have used on the job,Endrua,Voyager,Bm 710,Spyderco Rescue,CQC7,sak.Right now I'm thinking of going to a small stout fb.

Loss is a real possiblity, almost a question of when not if.Thats why a lot of my co-workers won't spend much for a blade.:(

If you carry it on your uniform pants, when you pull up your bunkers they often catch the clip and out it goes.Carry it in your bunker pockets and it can fall out when you take your coat off and toss it down while you cool off,or your coat gets sent in for cleaning while your off duty and comes back clean but knifeless.Theres a ton of ways to lose a knife on this job. Most guys carry screwdrivers, pliers and other tools in their coat pocket, pull out one tool and maybe another falls out with it,or they often poke holes in the pocket and lose things that way.

Pick a good knife that you like,a lot of guys go their whole career without ANY knife, and most of the ones who carry, often its a sak or something like an ez-out.All the ones mentioned will serve you well.

Just check it often,I lost my Rescue at a fire amonth or so ago,How? no freaken idea.

Stay Low,Larry

my vote is for a Buck 110 on your belt and a Buck Strider clipped on the inside of your turnout coat pocket. It wont come unclipped until you pull it.the rough G10 handle holds great.
guy:)

as an Industrial construction worker I carry these every day. I climb around through pipe racks , over and under all kinds of equipment daily. With and without harnesses...Buck 110 with a CPM20CV blade and a quick deploy sheath and a BUCK 55 in my pocket. Just an fyi a traditional knife sharpener is almost useless once the 20CV DOES get dull.I use a Work Sharp Ken Onion edition to maintain the 16.5 ° blade bevel

I spent close to 20 years in OR and Emergency room in US and EU. I always carry this and a small knife.
I can almost guarantee you will use the shears much more than a knife, they are strong and inexpensive.
Much better suited for cutting belts and bandages than any knife with pointed tip, they also have wire cutter built in.
It will be very beneficial if you can find the one with the opening/hole for the O2 tanks, picture below is just FYI.

Hinderer!! Designed and built by a firefighter!!

If outta of budget, a Emerson, as hard as they come!!

Haha, only option! I love you Crk guys, must admire the commitment and confidence 😉

For the record I have one, just not my only option 😂
