So i have decided to "try" and drop some money on a "nice" user knife for general outdoor. I live in florida, but hopefully will expand to start going to some other states as the kids get older.

I have a bunch of Barkies, love them, no issues. Also have some fallkniven, again great knives. But i sort of have a itch to get a one of a kind knife. I was thinking of getting a Dozier knife or a Bayley knife. Only problem with the latter is the 6 year wait period. i have a guy that wants to sell his, unused but its a Raven model not a S4.

So what are your thoughts guys, and do you know of other top shelf makers you might recommend instead of these two? I guess I am looking for a one of a kind knife that I will hopefully pass on to my son later. He is young but tends to follow in dad's footprints, at least for now.:D

thanks for the help guys.

have a hunt through the knifemakers forums.

there seem to be a bunch of really good knifemakers that post here at bladeforums.com and i'm sure they'd be happy to help you out with a sweet custom, heirloom blade.

Decide what kind of a knife your wnating made, General type, materials,a nd a general budget.

Then post a query on the custom knves forum. You'll get several referals for many quality custom makers.

Matt Bailey
Matt Lamey
Tobin Smith
Ray Laconico
Daniel Koster

These are the makers I have outdoor/ camp knives from right now. Tobin just built me an awsome chopper for a very reasonable price but I can highly recommend these makers from experience with them and their work.

It sounds like you already have some very nice knives!

nice for factory knives, but sooner or later, we all want a custom knife. :)
Don't forget makers like Stomper, Doug at DK knives, Phillip Patton, Tim Olt Dave and Jason Winston, Gene Ingram, Rick Menefee...........

True. My favorite, and one of the very few that is "safe" from potential trading is my SDS Nessmuk.

Look in the "makers" forum for the fixed blade hunter by Tim Hartmann. It's going to be better than any Bark River stuff and comparible to a custom Dozier. I figure I'm qualified to make that statement as I have all three makers, and for the money Tim's knives are a steal.

You could always go with a Randall. While they aren't exactly a one-of-a-kind, they are definitely the kind of knife that you could pass down to a son or daughter.
