need woods/hiking carry sheath for large folder

Hi, guys.

Hoping you can point me in the right direction. In the summer months, I spend time in the woods day hiking and stuff. For a variety of reasons, I carry a stout folder instead of a fixed blade.

I've got a custom Bob Dozier Workhorse coming in, which may be considered the original "overbuilt" folder. Big titanium handle, Dozier tab-lock, and 4.25" D2 blade. Too big to comfortably carry in my pocket while wearing light shorts/pants. I'm looking for a belt sheath +/- retention lanyard.

In the northeast, it tends to be wet and muggy in the summer months. So, I don't think leather would be the greatest choice. I'm thinking in terms of Cordura magazine pouches. I've seen knife sheaths in that style by Maxpedition, Blackhawk, and others; even Victorinox offers something along those lines:

Any recommendations?

Hot waxed leather is pretty dang waterproof, and provides a good stiff sheath for support. I say go with what looks good to you, and if they are cheap enough get two or three different designs and play around with them to figure out what you like with each one, than look for a sheath with those features, or have one made. If you don't want leather, than don't go with leather.

I like leather. Just didn't think it would work.

Any specific makers or brands you'd recommend? I'm new to this! Never used a sheath before.

If you can't find a "sheath" your pleased with perhaps check out pistol caliber mag pouches. Usually made of 1000d.

Get kydex. Its much more durable than leather plus it can hold the knife really well. Check out Red Feather Gear for custom sheaths at a good price (not an advertisement)

I'd really prefer something that completely covers the knife with some sort of flap. I've lost knives in woods before (pocket clip carry) and I don't want that to happen to my Dozier! Besides, I'm not crazy about how kydex tends to scuff up the finish on firearms; I suspect it would do the same to titanium scales.

Does anyone here make pouch-style custom sheaths? I'd be into that. Leather or nylon would be great. I'd consider kydex as long as there's some sort of lining to prevent damage.

To give you some perspective, this is the knife I'm talking about (arrived today). A real giant!

As a point of comparison, here she is with one of the largest folders around: the Extrema Ratio *185 RAO
