I'm headed back to Brazil in January for five years and was hoping to take a few good books back with me.

I'm most intrested in Desert and Jungle survival. Believe it or not I have both types of terrain in my home state. I already have FM 21-76. I'm planning to pick up the SAS Desert and jungle survival manauls. Any recommendations? Mac

GEM publishes a pocket version of Jim Wiseman's SAS Survival guide that is great.

Mark,

You have a book out there on desert survival... Could we invite you to post your rough draft stuff here?

Have you ever been to South America? Mac

What knives are you taking?

May I ask why you are going? Will you be staying in a city, or in the jungle? Or what?

Thanks.

Terry,

I am a missionary. I work with inner city youth in Belo Horizonte, central Brazil. I also work in a camp about 1.5 hours outside the city in a rural area.

I teach wilderness survival as part of my work with young people. Most of my kids are city born and bred and have no wilderness experience. It is a blast to get them out there for the first time.

Where I live it is quite urban but Brazil is interesting in that you can drive an hour away and be in really serious wilderness. Do a google search for Serra do Cipo and you will see the type of terrain that we have locally.

Knives I'm taking back: Newt Livesay NRGS & WOO, Ontario Machete, Becker BK-7, CS Large and small Bushman. I'm forgetting some... I try to use as much local gear as possible down there so the kids get the idea that they can do it with things locally available. If not they tend to think they have to have gear imported from the US. That's not the case.

When I go out by myself or with my daughter we carry top notch stuff becuase I enjoy it. Mac
