I'm currently interested in a Bear & Son stockman pattern. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this brand or any strong opinions either way.
The model I'm looking at will be in the EDC rotation and used. As advertised with stag and 1095 steel , which turned me on! Thanks in advance for your input.

I've never owned one but if you use the "search" button to search this forum you'll find that the consensus on their knives is pretty poor by and large.

It's your money and how you spend it is (of course) your business but I think that you may have better alternatives on how and where you spend it.

Good luck.

Blues, I checked out the search tab (duh), and see your point. Lost my head and acted on impulse when I saw the 1095 steel. I'd still like another recent opinion or two if available. I'm itch'n for another stockman pattern to edc, and looking for something nice in bone or stag. Also like the Queens. Thanks kindly for your input.

Regards,
Jeff

Queen makes some of the higher end Moore Maker knives in 1095. I have a couple of their stockman patterns in the yellow bone and they're good knives though higher in price than the Bear offerings.
(Bear also makes some of the recent economy models for Moore Maker as far as I am aware.)

Queen, GEC, Moore Maker, and the now defunct Camillus and Schrade knives (available on the net as well as in our sale/trading forums) all offer 1095 steel and should fit the bill...And Case CV is nothing to sneeze at either. Boker generally uses the equivalent of 1075.

I'm sure you'll find the right knife. Just take your time and do some exploring.

Blues,
Yeah, Dad carried Schrade Old Timers. So sharp I got cut just looking at them. Carrying Case 6318 Amber Bone in CV now. I like it! Just looking for a little different color handle. Not sure why, just fickle taste I suppose. Thank you for your encouragement, I'll check them out. You know how it is after payday, $$ burning a hole in my pocket!

You'll find plenty of help here when it comes to spending your money. The slope may be slippery but it's a fun ride.

Oh, I forgot to mention, if you like stag and 1095, you might want to look at Eye Brand...(I don't know if you're looking strictly for USA made or not and we try to avoid arguing the politics of foreign manufacture in this forum.)

Here's an image of mine by way of example...(Best to see the knife in person first or ask your vendor of choice to look for one with the qualities you are seeking.)

Ooohhh.... That's a NICE one. I really like that one! On the politics..... well I'm as opinionated as most and more than some. Avoid the Chinese made stuff, got a Puma in Switzerland in 1981 and still carry it quite often, so German manufactured stuff to me tends to be pretty nice. I'm getting a huge kick out of reading the different threads on this forum. I think I have found me a home! I do tend to break a commandment or two when I browse through here, you know the one about coveting your neighbors stuff! I'm going through a sort of "loving the old fashioned stuff" phase right now and searching for the perfect pocket pet. A handfull to carry and a bunch to keep in a "shoebox". :)
Going to spend a couple of hours tonight shopping and researching online and see whats goin' on. Thanks again.

I've got a 4th gen Bear barlow and it is great. No problems with it at all. The fit and finish are perfect. I seem to be in the minority.

The Eye Brand models in stag are good, solid users. That stag in Blues' post above is absolutely stellar, and a prime example of why it's best to see it before you buy. Might get lucky enough to find one as nice. I like mine too, but the stag is nowhere near as 'popcorn' as his knife.

Regarding the Moore Maker economy models (produced by Bear & Sons) he mentioned, I'd steer clear of those. I have a couple of them, purchased at the same time, before I knew better, and they're pretty disappointing in fit/finish (worst blade play I've ever seen in a folder, in all directions).

Of all of the Bear and Sons knives I've seen, they were just not for me. Not a lot of snap, or walk and talk. I didn't like the overall asthetics of the knives either. However, I really liked their Remington reproductions (they took over after Camillus went under). Very nice to look at, and good snap etc. Edges could have been better. A little perplexing to me, that their knives produced for another line were of a higher quality than their own brand of slipjoints.

Thank you for your input guys. I will be traveling into knife store country, (deep south, not Florida) this fall and will probably find some of the mentioned to grab and feel. Meanwhile, I won a 8 dot Red Bone Stockman on the internet auction site this week and hopefully curbed my appetite for a "different color"! As they say "even a blind squirrel will find an acorn every now and then".

Ya'll have a nice weekend!
Jeff
