So I'm looking at getting one of the Vantage models, select large in 420HC, Avid in 13C26 Sandvik, or the Pro in S30V, all in the 3 1/4" blade. I know all have different handle materials. Would really love some feedback on all three. Kind of leaning toward the Select, just seems like a better deal for the money but don't have a problem spending more either but I do like value. Is the Avid and the Pro worth the extra money, any likes or dislikes about the different handle materials?
Thanks.

I have 3 pros and a select. The Pro to me is a steal at its price point, you get a great steel s30v and G10. Looks amazing too. The select isnt bad a good knife we all know 420 is a great steel. The handles on the select to me, make it look cheap. But no matter what you go with you wont be disappointed.

I have to agree with this. I speak more from a collector's viewpoint than as a user so keep that it mind. I have one of the Select models with the "plastic" handles and they just look cheap to me. The 420HC blade is a proven performer so from that point of view, it should be a very servicable and reliable user, but in my opinion the other handle materials add better eye appeal and class.

There were some Selects made with the same handle material as the Avid, but they may be hard to find. the ones below are the Selects I'm talking about.

 I have a couple selects, avids, and one pro. I like them all. My selects have wood handles though. I would have to vote for the avid model, I like the wood handles and the Sandvik steel is pretty good stuff. Not taking anything away from the pro or select, I just like the wood better. ;) What Dave just said :D LOL

I was also going to recommend this Cherrywood Avid that was available for $36 on Buck's Web Specials page, but I just checked and they are gone.

If you're looking for economy....Select!
If you're looking for a knife that will take a scary razor's edge....Avid!
If you're looking for a knife with outstanding edge holding....Pro!

My father likes to sharpen and keep a scary sharp edge so he loves the Sandvik steel.
I like a steel that holds a quality cutting edge so I prefer the Pro.

I have an Avid that I used daily for close to a year.It got used hard and not babied. It's been sharpened a few times. The only problem I had with it was when the pocket clip got hung on something and bent.My Son was gifted a Select model and keeps it as a collector. The pocket clip is really no big deal for it can easily be removed and bent back in shape.Keep in mind the new 2011 models are different than the 2010s in appearance. The entire Vantage line are GREAT edc knives, that being said my vote would be to go for the Avid.No matter what one you choose, you're getting one heck of a knife for the money.

I have the Pro and the Select like Plum has displayed. I love em both but favor the Pro. I dont think the "oiled dymondwood" handled Seclects look cheap, but the thermoplastics, to me, do. If I were getting a select, I would go with the blue paperstone.

If you are likely to use it a few times and move on to another, or put it into one of many daily rotation, go with the select. If you are buying a knife that you will rely on and depend on and use it and never want to buy another knife, get the Pro or Avid. If you will get bored with it, get the cheaper one. Less money sitting in the drawer. I have the Select. It's one of many that I cary and I have roughly $20 in it.

"Keep in mind the new 2011 models are different than the 2010s in appearance" Skyhorse what is the change?

That's strange they must have added some, because I just bought one from the buck web site.

I checked before I posted that and they were gone. Then a day or so ago, there they were again. I've seen that happen before.
