Needing Vantage Select rattle advice

Picked up another Vantage Select and the thing rattles like a son of a gun all the time. I really don't want to send this in to the company and am very mechanical. Anyone out there had any issues in taking one completely apart? Is there something I can do to get the rattle out? It just makes the knife seem cheap and it's a quality knife as we all know. I know Buck has said it's not a normal warranty issue but they would work on it for others but like I said I'd rather do it myself if it's possible. And, what is rattling so loud??? I have two other Vantages that don't rattle one bit, is it possible to just take the scales off and swap with another of my knifes; maybe an easier fix yet but I'd really rather repair this one if possible.

Does it rattle when it is fully locked open? If not there isn't much you can do except lube the pin that fits in the rotation slot on the blade. Some of mine only rattle when partially open before full lock. It is like Mr. Hubbard said it is a matter of tolerances, when they go to the minus side there can be a better chance of a rattle. You may try switching the pin from one that dosn't rattle and see if that changes anything. If you are mechanically inclined they are very simple to work on.

I too love this model since I joined this forum in April I now own six Vantages and one Vantage force.

Mine rattles ALL the time, open, closed, doesn't matter. When I get home tonight I'm going to cannibalize from my other 2 and see how it goes. As you said, it seems working on these is pretty straight forward. I really might just swap slabs from one of my Dymondwood models and not even take them apart any further. Either way I'm sure I'll get it fixed. A rattle isn't the end of the world, doesn't make it work any better or worse, I'm just annal about rattles in my gear and if I can get rid of it I will. I had also thought about just using some heavy grease I have for lubing chain saw tips, would probably work great for this and get rid of rattle; lots of options for the fix is seems. Will let you know how it goes!

What on earth are you guys doing to them? I just spent awhile trying to get 12 of my Vantages to rattle with no luck. There are all the models except the paperstone in that group. Does the rattle start after you tinker with the screws or do they come that way out of the box?

I about wore my arm out shaking them, open and closed and I can't get even one little tiny rattle! I have about 12 more of them and I'll continue with rattle testing as soon as I get the strength back in my arm. :D

Oh I needed to laugh this morning, thanks Dave!

Send it back.
Yeah, I know you're handy, but......

I had a Vantage Force that rattled when it was open.
I called Buck and rattled it over the phone.
Customer rep asked for it back and replaced it outright.

I can't see where swapping the scales would make a difference, but I'd probably just start tinkering with it till it either rattled worse or I fixed it. ;-)

As I posted the other day under "Mystery of the Vantage rattle SOLVED"; Come to find out that it was the sleeve that goes over the center spacer rod was sliding back and forth because the factory had not completely tightened the screw squeezing the two halves together.

I have a 12-18-12 Vantage 341 and it rattled too and when I held the middle spacer and shook the knife the rattle stopped so I took the scale off (opposite side of Buck logo) and tightened the spacer screw with the head of screw being at least 1/32in. off the liner which made a difference in alignment and performance.

Bingo! That was the issue with my Vantage Pro and it was an easy fix. Take the clip side scale off and tighten the torx head screw to sandwich the small sleeve spacer in between both liners and it will cure the rattle. It is the spacer located in the center of the liners.

Great info guys, but do you realize how old this thread is? The guy you're responding to (Drover) hasen't even been back on the forum since the middle of June last year.

Yeah that's why I included my knife's date so to update.

Hey, I have been looking for hours on if the clips on the small and large Vantages are different in size or not and If they can be swapped, do you know? Also, Is there a thread showing a breakdown of a Vantage with step by step photos?

There's a good bit of difference in size of the two clips. The one for the large vantage is longer and wider but the screw holes have the same spread. I suppose that you could put the small clip on a large Vantage, but not the other way around without opening up the recess in the butt of the knife's handles and shortening the part that fits in the recess.

Plumberdv, thanks for the reply for it helped. I was hoping to swap a black clip from a large Vantage Force to a 342 assuming that large Vantage and Vantage Force use the same clip.

I just got a 11-19-12 Vantage 342 in the mail today and it's just not up to my expectations and I'm disapointed in quality control. One issue is it has the spacer sleeve rattle noise just like my 341 had. Is it best to tighten this spacer myself or leave it like it is or send it back to shipper for exchange or send to Buck to be tighened?

Guess I'm going to have to start buying in person instead of mail order.

I have a 345 that rattles.
The rattle gives it great character. I'll never fix it.

There has to be a reason the screw isn't tightened all the way and in some cases not even threaded on so many knives. If the screw isn't at least threaded it compromises the strength and alignment of the knife. Then again, when the screw is tightened if loose it can cause the blade flipping operation to be more stiffer.

A Buck-Rattler is even more intimidating than a stilleto click, or the shucking of a pump-action shotgun.

;):D:)
