Needless purchases

Have you ever purchased a knife that has no functional value in your life, not a single reason for the necessity of ownership, save for impulse and attraction? After the initial fun of ownership wore off, did you feel you made a mistake, or was the money well spent?

GREAT reply Cognitivefun! made me lol and i feel the exact same way.
i think we all have bought something just on the feeling of "can't live
without that"

My Cold Steel Tai Pan...It's my 2nd one, and I still can't legally carry it, but it DOES look nice hanging on my wall, next to the other knives that I can't carry.:D.

I would say all of my bowies fit into that definition. They have been bought for my collection and will never be used. The luster has worn off of a couple of my purchases, but I have never thought of any of them as mistakes.

Yeah, I have felt, on occasion, "Oh, crap, why did I buy this?"

Most of my knives have gotten some use or carry time, but some just sit.

For awhile, I had this really bad habit of "If one is cool, more is better."

I had three Emerson Commanders, two Ravens, two or three Crawford Kasper Folding Fighters, two Blackjack HALOs, two original Al Mar SERE folders, two Gryphons, thre Murphy SWAT knives of similar but varying configuration.

Nowadays, I don't have so many multiples — still have the Gryphons and the three Murphy knives, but mostly, one is enough.

they are all a mistake and money well spent.

Exactly!

There have been a few that I've just felt magnetically attracted to (probably due to high iron content in the blade or something) which were silly to purchase. But, later on, proved to be extremely valuable financially. A Microtech Halo, for example, purchased for something like $295. It was just to cool not to buy. But I never used it or carried it or anything. It just languished in a drawer until years later when I realized I could sell it for $799!

ugh a Cold Steel OSS in carbon V. Not a particularly bad knife, just completely useless! I gave it to a buddy of mine shipping of to afghan, maybe he'll get some use out of it. Hopefully just chopping things and not defending himself, unless need be.

I don't use my Woodard Fer De Lance or Pocket Pro very much (if at all). The Microtech UTX-70 is rather expensive for such a small knife that doesn't get used much either. But I don't regret any of my purchases so far. At the very least, I can consider them an investment into my future, since if I'm going to be a knifemaker, I need various autos to disassemble and learn how they work.

Really one bad mistake.

I bought a double-bladed (by which I mean it had two knives joined back-to-back) display piece by Gil Hibben. Somehow, it looked so shiny in the display case at the store. It didn't cost a whole lot, of course, but I was out of work at the time and it was the holidays... money better spent elsewhere. It's still in the box, covered in oil, wrapped in plastic, and I have no idea what I'll do with it.

It's a bad mistake for me because it doesn't do anything. Shortly after I bought it, I took it out, threw a carboard box in the air, and stabbed it. Not surprisingly, the box was barely punctured: the energy of the thrust was divided by the two blade tips, making it 50% effective. So I wrapped it up, where it's stayed quiet for the last 14 years.

This is an amusing thread, because I often get into discussions with myself about knives that are quite out of my budget, but I MUST have...then realize later that I wasn't going to use it. The fun was just OWNING it.

Large Vaquero Grande: barely used, but really fun to have.

Cuda MAXX 5.5: I bought into the hype. What can I say? Can't carry it.

CRKT KFF in AUS6A: I bought all of these. Why...I haven't the foggiest.

But I must say that for every edged tool I've bought where I said "what possessed me to make this purchase", I have 3 or 4 that I simply CANNOT part with, and I either carry everyday, use everyday, or simply enjoy having everyday. That's the fun of it for me.

I often purchase knives for no other reason than " thier illegal, and I can'nt
own them". I have several switchblades, daggers, sword canes etc.
I also have plenty of using knives but the stuff you don't need
is always intriguing and fun to own. :p

Benchmade balisong that was fun to flip open, but didn't cut that well and didn't carry well.

Cold Steel recon tanto with a blade too thick for efficient cutting and not heavy enough for efficient chopping.

Yes, Yes, Yes, No, Yes.
Attraction , rarely impulse. Buy because of workmanship and the rep of the maker, this includes miniatures. Also buy as future investment for some, others for possible use.

None of my purchases are needless. I want them so I enjoy having bought them. What I buy and don't like, I give away to make someone else happy.
I can actually kick myself for turning down impulse buys. Just yesterday I was at a knife store in SF (pier 39) and turned didn't buy a Kershaw Whirlwind with green handle for $30. Would it have replaced my current edc (BM710)? No friggen way. Would I have played with it for a half hour before getting bored and realizing that it's no better then the one I dislike in my store? Yes. Could I have given it to a buddy who lost the same knife (black handle) and really misses it? HELL YES!!! AND NOW I'M MAD AS ALL CRAP!!

If I have typed strangely, it is because I had my wisdom teeth removed today and am quite groggy.
