Hopefully some of you more experienced and wiser members could chime in and help me decide on a tough decision. I work with a B-I-L doing remodeling and landscaping, and there's been a little bit of a dry spell in work, soon to pick up though, we got a couple of things lined up. Only problem is in a month or so after we finish all the jobs there is no promise of more work, and with winter coming I'm sure that will cut down on work also, so once I finish the upcoming projects should I quit and find another job? I know in today's economy I'm pretty lucky to have a job at all, but low pay and manual labor isn't exactly pleasurable. Of course in December my sister is having a baby so he will have to quit working this job also, he has another job so he will be okay financially going back to one full time.

1. So stick it out and wait for my sister to have a baby in Dec. and us both call it quits.

2. or after these upcoming projects quit try and find another part time job,

3. or try to pick up a part time job and work this one.

(:grumpy:I hate using the word quit, but resign is too formal for what I do :p)

Sounds like your between a rock and a hard place. When I am faced with a tough decision, I ask myself what I want to do. Sometimes thats a difficult question but I find that its one that is most important. Do you enjoy landscaping? Do you like other manual jobs? If not, what skills do you possess that will qualify you in another job that interests you? If you don't have those skills, how can you gain them? Can you walk into an entry level position with less pay but something you want to pursue?
If you cant answer these right away, write them down or write down what you do want to do. I find its much easier most of the time to write the answer down on paper. 9/10 its the right decision but one that is difficult.

Well I enjoy working with my hands, but on a hard day or a day where your in the rush to beat the rain, it sucks. Also an entry level position would probably bring in more pay for less hours (we give a guesstimation about the price it will cost to do the job, we don't go over the guesstimation when we finish the project but if everything goes smoothly we do subtract. Now if we run into some unexpected hold ups then we get screwed), but I would hate to abandon a family member. Thanks for the advice you had a lot of great points, I'll continue to think it over

My father told me that whenever you are thinking of leaving a job or a woman, always get another one lined up before you leave the one you are with!

Sounds like he is going to do what is good for him when the baby comes. Fair game for you to do what is good for you now.

I worked for my father at one time. I don't anymore. We are still on great terms, perhaps better now than when I worked for him.

When it comes to life you gotta do what you gotta do. It would be bad for you to be jobless in December and feel that B.I.L. is somewhat responsible.

self termination=no unemployement. if you have worked at least 13 consecutive weeks, you may qualify. laid off and termination are two different animals. also like one of the previous posters said, line up another if possible before leaving you current one.

ps- if it was all cash, you won't get unemployement. also watch out you don't get 1099'd at the end of the year.

Yeah but it almost requires two people to do half the jobs, so if I leave him then I'll basically be screwing him over. I'll wait it out and hope, I'll be sure to have another job lined out before Dec. hits.

Nah thats not a road I'll travel down, way too young and I'm sure I can find a way to get another job, besides the job is only going to be for less then I'll start college.

If your working a manual labor job without the possibility of advancement, you should really be looking for something better anyway.

I'm in the same boat sort of. I left a good job in Jersey as a lead plastics tech of 10 years and now I'm working with my brother in pest control here in Texas.

I always have my eye out for something better, either hours or pay, and my brother understands that.

I doubt your BIL would hold it against you if you went on to improve your situation. If he did, frankly, it's his loss.

So when the season is up you collect unemployment or plow snow? (dose it snow enough in VA) keep your job while looking for another one.are you in any position to go back to school?I wouldn't know wear you would look cuz they don't advertise
people who have gold parties allways need some one they can trust.not cash for gold crap or pawn shops.but gold parties there local I have a friend who is A flunkey for some people who have gold parties the pay is pretty good.he doesn't work very hard, hours can be weird. He went to one, talked to the people having the party told them He want to learn and if they ever need help left his number they tried him out for the frist six months he had to pay his own taxes they made him a employe now hes on the books.

Never feel bad about trying to better your own life.

I'm not too worried, I'm currently a senior trying to earn a military scholarship to go to college, so furthering my education is a goal of mine. Right now I just need a job to pay for what little bills and insurance I have. Truck insurance and gas money are consuming most of my pay but I can't cut out either of those.

.....hmm Lowes might be a good fit for me, I'll have to check with 'em later.

I thought you were older then you are,you are wise beyond your year's,and there is much more hope for you.
yes keep working and look for work, now as Dec approaches
up your time looking if you haven't found anything.try starbucks oil change places, meijer
jobs will be poping up as christmas gets closer.you probably feel oblgation to your B-I-L
you have your sights on a military scholarship so you'll be leaving in a year or two.
after the baby when your B-I-L goes back to work you might go back with him.you have some bills and need to keep the cash flow.

If your working full time and get laid of. Get unemployment till you find another job. You pay into it. You have one week no pay = waiting week then start collecting due to laid off from lack of work. Could be a few $$ dollars for a few weeks till you get another job. You only do one waiting week a year so if you work a few months get laid off you collect right away again for a few weeks or even one wee. If your working constution this is common practice for slow times.

I haven't had a job since I separated from the Air Force-the economy is a bitch. What's worse is every time I go to put in an application I have to fight through the psychological wall presented by the fact that the job I used to do was way higher tech and honorable than anything I can do now in the civilian sector (physical disability prevents service such as LE and firefighting.) If you can live off of savings for a while, I suggest some sort of education-if you don't have a degree even tech school, as you won't be making much money anyway you might as well be learning how to make more while we wait out these economic times. I went to two different universities today to talk to admissions counselors about getting in next semester.
