Needs Work knife

I have only handled one at a knife shop in Huntsville about 2 weeks ago. I appealed to me through the glass, and once I held it I almost bought it. The handle was really grippy and you can choke up on the blade well. The price was a bit high, you can get one for about 1/2 of what he was charging. In all probability, it will be my first kershaw...not too much help, i know. Hopefully someone who knows more can chime in and give you a good review.

I had one, gave it away as a gift to a student worker of mine. I got another one. I like it alot. It's alot of knife "for the money".

its a good knife. sharp right out of the box too. its a good knife for the price. i think it would be a good choice if you are thinking of buying one.

Anyone get or use the Needs Work knife yet? Opinions?

I have a couple, one with the standard-finish blade, and one black-bladed with Kershaw's DLC (Diamond Like Coating). A great cutter with a blade profile designed to do exactly that, along with a solid liner lock, a beefy grip, and, oh yeah, watch out...the point is sharp too...I found out the hard way! :D

A great value that lives up to it's name...I just gave one recently to one of my grown sons, who also needs work. ;)

I have one, and it is my only Kershaw so far... I hope to get a Blur with the s60v or sg2 blade steel soon. The Needs Work is great, sharp out of the box, easy to sharpen, and the polymide handles have a good amount of grip. I disabled the speedsafe, and it makes a great manual flipper. My main beefs with this knife are the pocket clip and the hollow grind.

The hollow grind is good, but I prefer a flat grind. Nothing really wrong with the hollow grind, it's just personal preference.

The pocket clip is both a pro and a con. The bad part about it is that it is short and stiff when it's new. Too stiff for the length. The good part about it is that after use, it loosens up a tiny bit, so it is just about perfect. I like the length of this pocket clip because it makes the knife more discrete.

Just to add what others have already said....I have one. It has really great ergos. (Feels great in your hand)
The AO kicks the blade out like a mule. It has a very decent steel(13C26) that takes a
great edge and holds it very well. All this and the above replies can be had at $30.
In other words......It's an awesome knife.

EDIT: You can't purchace the above replies and knife for $30. The replies are extra. ;) :D

I love mine. Since I EDC fixed blades so often it tends to be my only folder! It works like a charm. Get one!

I don't quite understand the "bend". I like it, except I worry about carrying it in my pocket sans clip (nothing to keep it from opening up)

Kershaw's SpeedSafe mechanism does a great job of keeping the knife closed until you want it open. If you open a SpeedSafe-equipped knife slowly with one hand while controlling the blade opening with the other, you find out it takes more initial force than you realize you're using when opening the knife normally to overcome the close-force of the torsion bar. Additionally, the blade actually has to travel farther in the open direction than it seems at normal speed before the torsion bar's open-force kicks in. I just don't believe one of these coming open in the pocket is something you need to worry about. I've never heard of one coming open unexpectedly except when dropped on the ground, and then it's not so unexpected. ;) Clipping it inside the pocket or carrying it loose in the pocket really makes no major difference that I can see.

I'm not sure what "bend" you're referring to. The curve (bend) in the blade's spine seems to be stylistic. The upswept handle design, another "bend", allows the full length of the blade to be utilized in cutting while keeping the gripping fingers lifted up and out of the way.

Another fine design from Kershaw...:D

I also have a Needs Work and love it for all of the above reasons. I also like the grip and the way it fires open. Don't love the clip though, you just have to tilt it a little to get the clip started (in my right rear pocket) when pocketing the knife, but once it's in it holds tight.

I forgot to mention in my above post that I have been carrying mine almost every day since I got it (Christmas Eve, '07). It's handled every job I needed it for, and I've used/sharpened it so much that it's blade is no longer straight... it isn't too noticeable, but it does have a little curve to the edge on mine. It's my fault for being a bad, obsessive, freehand sharpener though.

Overall, I really like this knife, and think it's one of the best for the money.

Fantastic knife and probably my favorite Kershaw that I own. My only complaint is that it is a tad chunky for pocket carry. I know the design is for it to be hand filling as a work knife, but it makes getting in and out of my pocket a little difficult.

Other than that, I pack mine every day. Great blade steel, great blade shape (sort of like if a utility knife and Seax had a love child), great feel in the hand, great value.
