We were at Cabela's today, and the price on Kershaw's Needs Work was too good to pass up, so I bought two :o . The steel is listed as 1820HC on the blade, any info or input on this steel? Thanks!

I think that's the model number. The steel is Sandvik 14C28N.

PG nailed it. Definitely the model number.

Looking it up online, I found one on fleabay listing it as a 1820HC with the HC indicating "High Carbon"

Mines just a good ole 1820 :D

Yeah, the HC is what is throwing me. The end of the box says, "1820 HC Needs Work High Carbon Blade", so is this a different steel for the blade than other Needs Work models?

Check out this thread, post # 7:

Not sure about the accuracy, but sounds reasonable..

I'm not entirely sure either, but it seemed consistent with their model numbers for the Blur. I have seen the "1820HC" model number listed at a few different retailers with 420HC in the description. I assumed the "1820HC" was similar to to the Blur "1670HC" model, which used 420HC steel instead of the Sandvik steel.

The model "1820" and the various with colors (1820GR, 1820RD, 1820BL) are listed with the Sandvik steel. Similarly, the regular Blur "1670" (and red-handled 1670RD), are also listed with the Sandvik steel.

Perhaps someone from Kershaw could clarify?

Im pretty sure they use some kind of sandvik steel in the blade on the needs work. I know its a pretty good steel, its really good at holding an edge. if they use 420 hc like some of the other people here are saying just make sure you clean your knife good if you get it wet because 420hc will rust.

well then... that's interesting

anyone have any data on performance of 420HC vs 14C28N?

I have the latter, but might pick up the former if there's a significant performance difference

Intuitive, but not empirical data.

I like them both. I can't seem to get the razor edge on the 14C28N some can, but I can get it plenty sharp. The Kershaw 420HC used in my Blur is exceptional for a work knife. Very easy to sharpen, takes a razor edge, holds the edge well, and I love the stuff.

But in south Texas summers, the 420HC will get rust spots (and I do mean, tiny little spots) when riding in my pocket, and the 14C28N will not.

As far as overall performance as a work knife, I don't see much difference in the steels.
