I am trying to find a Nessmuk knife that is big enough for Light chopping with an antler handle This is the first time ive really strayed from ESEE territory so I figured you folks could help. Im not really trying to break the bank either my budget is 150$ pretty much but anything would be helpfull thanks

The Nessmuk blade by deffinition is a slicer, not a chopper. It's a small, thin swept bullnose design with a full grind, and is in no way designed to work as a beater knife. Condor makes one in the 30 dollar range, or I'd stray to the maker's section and check out some of the offerings Fiddleback and the other makers have.

Yeah. The Nessmuk is supposed to be a slicer/skinner/utility blade. Koster makes some big ones (Monster Nessie, I believe).

An antler handle is also not a very viable idea for a chopper, either. If you're talking about antler or stag scales, that could probably be done by a custom maker, but if you're thinking of a full piece of antler with a crown, etc., it may not work out. A full piece of antler would have to have some sort of stick tang, which is not exactly conducive to chopping in my opinion. A full tang with scales (like the monster nessie) would be a better choice, in my opinion.

I have a custom Nessmuk from Shawn of SDS Knifeworks (check the makers' section). It is both a beauty and functional, and is my go-to fixed blade. It is 1/8" at the spine and will do light batoning, but that is not its forte.

The Grohmann #4 survival knife is very close to what you are looking for. It is available optionally with a stag handle and is quite heavy duty.

Leukkos, Kukris, bowies and other traditional choppers have been stick tang antler choppers for generations so I'd have (and have had) no problem using them as choppers. I have a design that will chop decently I believe @ 1/8", but I would not be reliable enough for you at this time in my life. I agree that other makers (that are good;) ) would be your best choice.

Good luck!

Antler handle and blade over 5" for $150, I think ya gonna be struggling buddy !

Give Matt of ML Knives a shout, he'll do you a great antler nessie but I think you'd be looking a little over $200.

Bruce Culbertson recently had a sort of swept bullnose cleaver for sale in the maker's forums, IIRC the pricetag was at around 150 bucks.

Thanks guys but I really do have to disagree about the nessmuk bieng a viable lite chopper see my grandfather had one that he made himself and was almost 3/16 of an inch thick he gave it to me along with a Case XX Folding Hunter to skin and butcher my first deer with as is tsallagi tradition and it was a great chopper through the years and now rests in his casket since this summer when he passed on but it was great for limbing trees and things while hunting and chopping logs up to 4 or 6" in diameter also making divots in wood for a bowdrill and skinning deer so in my opinion it is the greatest blade ever made imo thanks alott for your input

I guess my Booshway from Mark Wohlwend is a little Nessmuk on steroids-ish !

I stand corrected! You're quite right, of course. I guess I'm just one of the doubters when it comes to stick tangs...which is interesting, considering that I'm not even a thick-blade enthusiast (the usual suspect for such doubts). :o

You must mean a bigger heavier one like this....

arielsalaverrianessmuk1_big.jpg

that belongs to one of our members and made by Ariel Salaverria.

Or the full antler handle like this one (Dale Chudzinski who has the style down but also many negative comments in GB&U).

What exactly do you mean by light chopping? Cuts Like a Kris might've hit on something by mentioning a Leuku - it might be more what you're looking for.

matt @ ml knives

makes great looking nessmuks and stag is always an option with his knives.
he's an easy guy to talk to. shoot him a line, let him know what yr looking for, how you intend to use it, and see what he comes up with for ya. you cant go wrong with an ml knife. and his prices wont break the bank.

and has been mentioned already, there are MANY great makers right here on blade forums.
about any one of them can make ya a knife you'll enjoy for a lifetime
