Hello everyone,

I recently purchased twqo Delica 4 knives for everyday carry. One for each front pocket, as receommended by a defensive training class I had, which was excellant. I like the fact that they are under three inches and legal in all US jurisdictions. It was amazing to see how they cut on the "Porkloin" dummies in class.

My only question is: Is it normal for lockback knives to have a little blade play back and forth. it isn't much. I think it may just be the tolerance of the lockback mechanism. Eventhough, I feel secure that the lock is strong.

Thanks,
Dave

Welcome to the forum. :)

You will hear yes and no answers here. I have never had a lockback with any vertical play. Due to this I think the answer should be "no". However others feel differently.

I have 2 Delica 4's and neither of them have any play at all. Even if I try real hard I can't get any at all. Not vertical, or horizontal.

Go figure. ;)

I wouldn't accept a knife with vertical play personally, but I guess I'd have to see how much it is first. I've never had a Spyderco lockback with any play though, fortunately (I suppose I've been through six now?). Maybe I've just been lucky. In any case, if it bothers you, I'd suggest exchanging it with your dealer. If not, well, I have faith in Spyderco's locks, so I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Does "back and forth" mean side-to-side, or up-and-down?

If the former, then you might rectify it by tightening the pivot. If up and down, not sure what you can do.

As stated by others, I have not found much in the way of vertical blade play in Spyderco Delicas over the years. (I don't yet have a Delica 4, though).

I have four Delica 4's and no vertical blade play. My Delica 3 has a very small amount that is only noticeable when you press hard on a cut and only then is when I notice it and even then, if you weren't paying attention, it's not that obvious. When I was using the D3, it was a lot, and it's still tickin'

I just got a Delica 4 ZDP and it is excellent. No play at all - period.

It has been awhile since I had a new Delica - much less a model 4 - much less a ZDP Sprint Run - But this baby rocks! Perfect size and function for EDC ( in a large corporate machine). I am just loving it!

Don't get me wrong I love folders, but like anything mechanical they do wear and can fail. Having said that fixed blades are the way to go when you have any doubt about a folder's integrity. Good quality folders should not have any play. If it bothers you then its a sure sign to retire the knife or repair it. You don't want it to fail at the worst possible moment.
