Ever wonder what your Cold Steel blade looks like when you strip off that black viel?
nekkidRS.jpg

This goes back to the 19 hundreds, when I first found internet knife forums. The RS got alot of good comments, I wanted it, but it was black:grumpy:...then I saw a post by a fellow who dremeled his RS and polished it up....
Well, I bought it back then & just got up the courage yesterday!

More pix to come ;)

Oh yes...That looks much nicer than the original black (protective) finish...:barf:.:barf:.

And here it is @ 400 grit.
400grit.jpg

The plan is to work my way up to 800 grit...

Geeze Dann,
You didn't think I was gunna leave it that way, did ya?!!!
;)

Oooooh! You're turning me on!!! Maybe I should do that with mine...

Yes, all by hand!
I did the paint stripper on Friday night & started polishing around noon and quit around 4 or 5.
I bet if I knew what I was doing, it might have gone quicker :D
It was alot of fun, kinda relaxing (since it goes slowly) sort of like model airplane building...

Now my Livesay USMarshall is hiding from me!

And after that....

That is awesome work! Hand sanding blades is quite nice! And if you tell yourself that a hundred times a day, you may actually believe it! :)

Just kidding. Hand sanding sure is growing on me, as it is teaching me patience. That Recon Scout looks sweet, and the price is right to use them as project blades. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Ok, your 2nd picture looks ALOT better! :footinmou. In-fact, it looks GREAT!.:). I can't wait to see a picture of your finished project, as I now believe that it'll look really nice.

...I think that my "black" Bill Siegle Bowie knife is starting to fear me (and my sandpaper), 'cause I now have a "plan"...:D.:D.

Looking real good so far. I'll never understand why CS doesn't offer them (and the SRK) that way from the factory. A couple questions if you don't mind: How fast did the paint remover loosen the coating? What is the plan for the guard? Thanks for the info.

The paint remover saved alot of work.
I'd pat in on with a paper towe. Let it sit for 20 minutes (or 2 commercial breaks)...
It scraped off pretty well with a putty knife/scraper. I think I did it 2 or 3 times.

The blackticle coating would gum up the sandpaper.
I used the 200 dry until all of the black was gone. Then sprayed the blade with WD40 and used fresh 200 and after a while the 400 and WD40.

If you want to do this, please remember:
Only sand in one direction (North, North. Not North, South)
The handiest item was a scrap of heavy leather that I used to pad the sandpaper.
And watch your fingers!
Beyond that check out Beknives tutorial:

Nice WORK!!!!!
Betcha can't do just one..:D
If you are not careful you will be wanting to start making the whole thing yourself:cool:
Guess it is time to make you a kit and see what you can do with it,That would be cool.
Bruce

Kits, eh?
Bruce you may be onto something!

Has anyone stripped the black of the guard?
Is there brass under there?

I have a Recon Scout blade and a Trailmaster blade hanging on a hook in my shop. I cut the rubber handles off both and knocked the guards off too. Both blades will eventually look like your finished version. After I regrind both blades, of course. Those blades are really too thick in the edge for my tastes. Unsure of what handles mine will end up with, but nickel silver or stainless will replace that brass.

Hhhhhmmmmmmmmm, so there is brass under there...
The project grows.
I don't mind brass that much. I wouldn't request it, but could live with it.
I can see it now...while removing the blacktickle finish on the guard, I ruin the handle, which will have to be replaced...

Well it took me 2 1/2 years to get this far :)

How to thin the edges for the power tool challanged?
I'm thinking the sandpaper/mousepad route.
The only belts (ala Cliff's sharpening for dummies post) I could find locally were 50 & 120 grit. Too rough?
Suggestions?
