NEMESIS HELLION OVERVIEW:

"Don't Be fooled by its size" is what heads the description on the NK (Nemesis Knives) website. Well they are right! The Hellion Mid-tech by artist Jeff Hall and NK is an amizing little knife, in a very neat package. Measuring in at 4.13", with a cutting surface of 1.63" and a weight of .80oz this is a mini powerhouse! The Hellion comes with a nice, simple kydex sheath and a few different attachments, for carry versatility. There is a long beaded chain from wear as a neck knife, a smaller beaded chain for attachment to either the included keyring, or button hole clasp. The knife itself is made out of S30V (there is enough said about that steel, so no need for a review of it).

HANDLE:

The handle is pretty ergonomic despite its size. There is room for 2 fingers on the bottom as well at the nice thumb ramp on top of the blade to aid in control of this little jem. There are some small beveled holes drilled into the handle which keeps the weight down to a minimum, and also allows you to attach a lanyard to the rear of the tang to extend the gripping surface.

BLADE:

Well you know what S30V is capable of, and this knife, despite its size is a performer. The short cutting surface is great for scoring dry wall (no I am not crazy), opening mail, slicing into your favorite tree grown fuit, or what ever else you can think of. I am also thinking that if you make it scary sharp, it could be used as a field expedient scalple!

SHEATH:

The kydex sheath to this carry system is great. Very flat and unobtrusive. When worn as a neck knife, you don't even know the knife is with you till you need it. You may even forget about it because of the weight and flatness during carry. So wear a rubber band around your wrist to remind you that you have your Hellion. ;) Fit and finish of the sheath is top notch. It has 3 holes in it for various carry options.

SUMMARY:

Overall this is a great knife, that I don't think anyone should be without. The fit and finish are excellent. Grind lines are even. Did I forget to mention that this knife can be bought between $49.00-$59.00 either on line or locally (I got mine at Chesapeake Knife and Tool here in MD)? Wow, a neat mid-tech necker, made of S30V at a great price! I salute NK and Jeff Hall for making such an affordable package. I know that www.TADgear.com sells them online, and I think you can get them directly from www.Nemesis-Knives.com I hope that you guys don't pass up on this knife. You would be missing out.

I have a Bitteroot, which is a similar style necker. I found what you can also do with the small chain is to loop it through that last handle hole, where it helps finding/withdrawing the knife.

I also ran beads on the neck chain and the small handle chain :D

Would a knife that small be useful in a fight though? I mean, I can understand their huge practical value, but you couldn't penetrate to any organs, and the grip wouldn't allow powerful slashes...

Just asking because some of them seem to have a "tactical" look, which may be misleading... If I only had a neck knife and I had the option to run, I would run!

I have a MERC Leash (a cool lanyard made by MERCOP) attached to mine, and that not only helps in retrieving it from the sheath, but also extends the grip quite a bit. The fact that the blade is short does meant that penetrating vital organs is probably out of the question, but you can slash like a beast with it. I kind of like that I can't penetrate deep enough to easily kill someone, but if I use it to slash I can make some deep wounds that the guy would never forget. If you think about it, that makes it a little safer to use in a fight if you had to.

Of course you can kill someone with it. Just as easily as if you had a small folder with a 3 inch blade. All the vitals on the neck, arm pits, femoral arteries, etc are all within reach. Vital organs via the stomach are all within reach using compression cuts (basically cut than push in, think of opening a hole and then sticking your hand in, slicing the whole time). Reaching the heart would be pretty hard, as well as any type of chopping.

But yeah, you can kill someone really easy with a small blade. Heck, most of those vital targets can be reached with a broken piece of glass.

edited in the word targets for organs.

I don't know how to knife fight so, I can't really comment on anything less then the obvious. I guess you could use it in a last ditch effort, but it is a great little utility blade nonetheless.

These are utility knives. But looking at the Hellion, I can see it would be just as easy to grip well as the Bitteroot. And just as hard to disarm, being almost entirely enclosed in a firm grip, and too small to get to, unlike a seriously large blade. It's sort of like the Hideaway, turning your thumb into a claw.

Exactly right, if you choke up a little on the grip and put your thumb on the entire blade spine, you have a nice finger razor. This one isn't comming out of your grip, unless you drop it. I have had it for a week now, and it is a great little knife.
