Neo Tribal forge help

I started making a neo tribal forge out of a 5 gallon tub, like the one Tim Lively shows on his website. I mixed half and half, abobe soil and sand, with a good bit of wood ash. My problem is that as it is drying, there are many cracks developing in the matrix. Should I start over with different material, or let it dry and see what happens? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

cracks won't hurt nothing, but if you want it to stay together better use some straw,grass or horse manure
