Man, Nepal is on the brink. This was the lead story on CNN International today:

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/04/20/nepal/index.html

Soldier shooting peaceful protesters wanting democracy. Dictatorial rule. Maoist rebels enforcing a general strike. Man, I really feel for that place. More strife than one place ought to take, and I think we all feel a special connection to this place. I sure hope the world will talk some sense into their king. In the meantime, Nepal is in my thoughts and prayers.

Nepal Ho? Such is Nepal? I sure hope this is not to be the status quo there.

From what I can tell, Nam, the King doesn't want democracy and neither do the Maoists...that means the people are between a rock and a hard place.

My friend and I were talking about religion and materialisim one day.

We were talking about how rejecting materialisim could make you a better person, but often a situation of extreme poverty without first rising youself up to be able to get above it often made you a worse person.

I think that's the problem with Nepal. The resources are so scarce that survival of the fittest has taken place.

One of my freinds just got back from Nepal, things indeed look pretty bad. A couple of monthes ago things were looking a bit better, the maosits were willing to compromise with the political parties on the multi-party democracy issue in order to deal with the dictatorial monarchy. One has to be a little suspicious as several of the main political parties are also communist but holding to democracy, this would definatly erode support for the maoists in elections. Hopefully the political parties will be able to once again come to some sort of agreement with the maoists at least untill the greater of two evils has been dealth with/ It seems that the option of peaceful protest is being taken away from the people of Nepal, my heart goes out to them.

Sounds like another country..... wait, that is Iraq and a hard place!

Evry political party in Nepal is demonstrating for free elections. Apart from the Kings.

The Maoists are just one of the parties. The maoists are organising the strikes & military stuff.

Most of the current demonstrationa against king are buy the other parties.

The maoists also say the want the free elections with all parties included. That has been thier main publicised aim.

But of course what they might do further down the road is impossible to know. Perhaps depends on thier supporters, whether they are just anti royalists who currently march & fight alongside the maoists for thier own purposes. Or whether they want to win at all costs.

Intrestingly the Chinese say that they are not true communists & have always refused them any support.

Either way its a mess.

"I'm ok Bill. It is bad, but pretty exciting too. This king has to go.

Internet keeps going off, so I'm keeping messages brief so I can answer all the back log of e-mail.

All is not well... but we are certainly not in physical danger or anything like that. I support the fight for democracy... but I stay in doors during the curfews like a good foreigner should.

Steve

P.S. Been thinking of your surgery and sending well wishes for quick recovery into the ethers."
