Yangdu gave Red Flower and me a National Geographic DVD on exploration of the caves of Mustang. We discussed the old cave burials here on the forum a while back. The video goes into that, as well as the discovery of old Bon manuscripts. Bon was the religion of the region before Buddhism. The two religions share many similarities, but Bon is looked on as more akin to witchcraft in modern times. There is a funny passage in Lama Govinda's "Way of the White Clouds" where he meets a lama and begins to do a puja. After a while he realizes that the lama is doing things in a contrary direction to the way he learned, and it finally dawns on him that he is with a Bon lama. Anyway, it is an ancient path and an interesting one. The video also shows an encounter with a political "youth group" that helps to illustrate the politics of the region.

Red Flower and I would like to share this with the forum. Anyone who would like to see it sign up in this thread. When you get the video and are done with it, contact the next person in the thread and send it on to them.

We will also include a book on Tibetan Buddhism by Sogyal Rinpoche called The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. This is not "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" although that text is discussed. Red Flower and I have signed the inside cover and any other forumite wishing to do so is welcome to sign it as it passes through their hands.

Anyway, if you would like to have a look at the video and the book, sign up here. The first poster after this one, please PM me your mailing address and I'll start them on their journey.

Howard,

Thank you for your generosity in sharing this video and book. I'd like to get in line after Joe to take a turn with the materials.

If I may speak up, I've heard some dispute about the nature of Bon, with some saying it's a pre-Buddhist faith, while others insist that it IS a form of Buddhism, just very different from mainstream Tibetan Buddhism. But that's probably a subject unto itself.

Very interesting. I don't know much about it. Where did you find the information? Apparently (from the video) the Bonpo agree, except they might phrase it that Buddhism is a form of Bon. They say their guy came before Sidhartha.

Me, I only heard of the controversy by reading the Wikipedia article. However, i neverread of its being settled definitively.

I did hear of the term "Bon" being used in a somewhat broad sense, though, to refer to early Buddhist, pre-Buddhist, AND/OR occult elements, the only commonality between which, is being outside of the Tibetan mainstream. Apparently, use of the term is quite tricky. (I certainly wouldn't call myself an authority.......)

Howard
can you send me the address of the next person to get this package.
Jim

From now on people communicate with each other to keep things moving. I don't need to get in the middle. Jokiddo as next on the list should contact you. I'll drop him a PM and you may wish to send him an e-mail so he'll have a place to send the info.

What did you think of the video and book?

I own a copy of the book bought it a few years back - is the DVD available somewhere to purchase or is it home made?

Well sometimes it changes when i read it but i am like that with books that i study and read - i like to read a book like that at least three times about two years apart.

I had some realizations reading it and other parts were like affirmations or / well / like it answered questions sometimes and other times asked questions i already had answers for but didn't know the questions

I have been studying /reading the Bhagavad-Gita; the Upanishads; the book of Tao ; Kahlil Gibran and several others along those lines for the past 18 years so a lot of times they blend together at some point.
