Nepal's orphanage scam: growing trend for 'voluntourism' linked to child exploitation

Sure thing. The video talks about how a lot of orphanages in Nepal are actually for profit, and many of the children there are not orphans at all. Very poor parents will actually pay to send their children there, in hopes of getting them an education. The orphanages will make up phony stories about the children losing their parents, and use them to solicit donations from wealthy travelers.

Kind of a sad situation all around. I don't know how it could be fixed necessarily with the limited resources available.

I believe sad as it is that Nepal isn't the only place where that sort of thing goes on.

Many in pursuit of money use the "Its for the Children" a lot. Sadly the children get little if anything. Happens in many other aspects of our lives too. Goodwill, United Way (that's a good one). Salvation Army is the only one I've heard of that doesn't have a CEO making 6 figures or better.

india is a hotbed of corruption and I think it just spreads from there, tapping the poor of nepal for exploitation, the arabs do it with them as construction and house workers too :( at least HI provides fairly.

Indians operate orphanages in Nepal for profit?
Quite some theory.

Maybe the orphans are actually kids of our coalition of the willing soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and often vacationing in Nepal?

Maybe it's just some weird Commy scam to make Tibetan kids disappear in Nepal.

Or it's the Pakistanis trying to fund more terrorist and nukes?

All same part of the world so kind of plausible?
Not.

Not saying your theory is as fake as the ones I just made up, but even a hint of a proof besides geographic closeness could go a long way.

I think it's like in any other country. The ones with power and money trying to get more power and money from the guys with less power and money. Why would Nepal be any different with or without India or other evil foreigners?
That so many Nepalis have to sell themselves for cheap to Oil countries and live under less than humane conditions is a strong indicator that in Nepal things are even worse.

I wish more would act like our HI!

lol no jens, just saying being a poor relatively primitive nation ( many many still subsistence farm), right beside a massive nation with over a billion people known for its corruption, can probably influence the amount of corruption going on inside nepal. all we know for sure is that rich arabs exploit nepalese workers, and nepali workers are fairly regularly mentioned in international reports on worker abuse. I am sure along with the arabs there are some nepali and indian people, did not mean to make it sound like indians are hiding in the scams directly and pulling them lol.

same way mexico is adversely affected by having a very rich drug using nation right beside it-- driving the cartels.
and very good point jen, this would not be an option if they did not feel it was a necessity to go off and work -- nepal has only in the last decade lost its king and had several government upheavals, I am pretty sure maoists still operate in the country too .
