im really thinking of getting a g-10 leek. i like kershaws speed safe alot. however, i own a chive (smallest one?) and the design appears to be very similar. my chive has a terribly unsafe frame-lock and the pivot screw constantly comes loose. so my question is how similar are the leek and chive designs? does it loosen like its little cousin? does it lock solidly even when thrust into say... a telephone book? i want one but i cant buy until im confident. any help is appreciated- CB

ps: ive already scoured the forums looking for a def. answer and saw the g-10 leek thread showing side-by sides. im looking for personal experience. thanks

I don't own a g-10 leek, mine is just the plain sided one, but it's probably similar in the lockup department. I love mine, never had a problem with it at all and it was my EDC pocket knife for about 4 months. As I said, I loved it. It fit great in my pocket, had a great blade, and the length of the blade and overall size of the knife was perfect. Never did any phone book stabbing but I used mine for everything.., cutting deer sausage and steaks, whittling on a peice of wood while I was bored, opening boxes, digging splinters out of my hand, the list goes on and on. Never once had a lockup problem and the blade held a good edge, don't think I've sharpened it once in 4 months.

I think you'd be very happy with any version of the leek you decide to buy. I'm probably going to get a couple different ones just because I like them so much, even gonna get my Dad one for Christmas(he liked mine).

Hope this helps!!

P.S. everyone says Kershaw's customer service is awesome, so I'm sure they would be happy to help you if you did have any problems, but I bet you'll never need to talk to them, I haven't had to! :)

The Frame lock version should be sturdier, and if the lock on your chive is failing it should be sent in for repair.

If you must have G-10 and the better lock, I would buy the G-10 Leek for the scale and blade (I assume you want the S30V blade), and get a regular Frame lock Leek and put the lock side of the handle on the G-10 leek.
Then you have a G-10 Frame lock Leek!

You could even get a black coated donor Leek to keep the colors consistent.

Not one problem out of my G-10 Leek. It's been used and used a lot.
As far as the pivot screw coming out, put a little Lock-Tite(blue) and
I mean just a dab, set the pivot, leave it alone over night....no worries
of it backing out. Also if the lock on your Chive is that bad, do yourself
and your fingers a favor and send it in to Kershaw. You'll have it back
very quickly.........and more importantly....Safer!!

thanks for the help guys. i think ill pick up one of the less expensive models to really check it out.

According to the Kershaw website the G10 model has a liner lock and NOT a framelock like some of the other variants. I've never had any issues with any liner locks from Kershaw. Most liner and frame locks seem to lock up even better with age as the end of the lock wears down a little and engages even more deeply. I've not had any issues with framelocks from Kershaw either and I own a chive (framelock), scallion (linerlock), Leek (framelock), and a Shallot (framelock)...all the veggies. I don't put them through extreme use but I do use them...the Scallion was an EDC for years till I lost it and they all locked up very well everytime.

I would take the good advice from the others and have your chive looked at or not use it if it is too small for your hand that you hold it or use it in such a way as to disengage the framelock. Happy hunting.
