I am trying to find out more information regarding the nessmuk knife. I really like the style and am drawn towards the dynamics of the knife. As I progress in my collecting and usage of different types of knives I am thinking I would like my first custom nessmuk style of knife. Can anyone recommend knife makers, sites or keywords to lead me to more research and info of Nessmuk himself and the style of knife? I recently found a knife maker cariboo blades and am wondering if they are on this site? I also like glossman blades alot too. I know custom knives can be $$$ so I am wondering if I can get a quality workhorse knife reasonably priced so as not to get the little misses to mad at me ;) Thanks all

If you want to see a beautiful Nessmuck, look at the current Nessmuck thread in the wilderness survival section.

The article that Esav linked to gives a short bio of George Washington Sears (Nessmuk. It also contains a review of a knife made by Dale Chudzinski. I would recommend that if you are looking to get a custom nessmuk, that you look elsewhere. Scott Gossman would be a good maker to contact.

The reason for this post is that I don't want you to go through what so many others have.

Dave Beck made a beautiful nessmuk that he called the Timberwolf, it
had a blue blade. Also P.J. Tomes makes a fantastic nessmuk, I have
two from P.J. You won't be able to get one from Dave but P.J. will
make you one.

Thanks for all the info guys I appreciate it. Thanks Gossman for the links, I may drop you an email.

Look in the wilderness and survival forum here. Fiddleback make some nice ones.

Scott,

I did have pictures of the knife, however I just moved from
California to Texas and I cant find anything. The only thing
that I cold do would be to photograph it again and mail you
some pictures.

I have always had a question about the Nessmuk design. What is the purpose of the hump? To me it just looks like a short butcher knife. What can it do that a standard dropped point knife can't do? There must be a logical reason for it.

Enquiring minds want to know. :D

By the way, I had a Walt Kneubuhler Nessmuk a few years ago. I sold it in a moment of insanity. :(

Bill Siegle also makes a nice one. You can still find Beck's occasionally if you keep your eyes open. Here's a really really big 9" bladed Beck Nessmuk (OK, it's really too big to be a Nessmuk) for you, Scott. Pair this one with a little nessie and you're good to go.

It's a design that shows the line of its development. Start with a broad blade for skinning. Give it a driopped point with a fairly obtuse tip angle to avoid unintentional piercing. Now sweep the tip up to provide more belly for skinning, or for chopping to allow for rocking cuts. If you cut off the hump at this point, you get too acute a tip angle. Leave the hump, and you have a brace for an extended finger or thumb.

There are other knives that have a similar look even though they are obviously not meant for the same work. Look at the Becker Machaxe. In that case, the extra mass is for balance and weight for slashing.

I would HIGHLY recommend Daniel Koster! He builds a very good Nessy at a very reasonable price...

Check out these that he took to BLADE.... LINK

Ralph, I was just curious what it looked like as I may have something similar.
Broos, I do have one of Dave's throwing knives that looks like a Nessmuk on steriods. :D

Scott,

I shot a few pictures of the Beck Nessmuk and also the P.J.Tomes
Woodcrafter I will have the prints made today and I will send you
a set.
Back in the mid 90's when Tactical Knives first came out, there second
of third issue had a big story and pictures on the Nessmuk and Woodcrafter
that is how I found Dave Beck and P.J.

Walt Knebulher WK Knives made a Nessmuk knife that I think you would like. He has been dead for maybe 20 years but you may find one out there. Good luck.
