Rik affectionately calls this one 'Humpy 2' and it's a beautifully done 'Nessmuk' style friction folder. It features a 3 inch blade of forged 1084/15N20 twisted jelly-roll Damascus and is edge-quenched. Handle is distinctive Crown Stag antler. OAL is 8 1/2 inches.
In truth I had to look up 'Nessmuk.' For those who don't know, George Washington Sears, aka Nessmuk, lived mainly in the second half of the 19th century and wrote extensively about his camping and canoe adventures. He is generally accepted as the first practitioner of 'modern' light weight camping and also pioneered the recreational use of our national parks.
This blade style was preferred by Nessmuk and was part of a trio of edged tools he carried and advocated. The others were a two bit hand axe and a double bladed pocket knife. Unless I'm mistaken the big bellied Nessmuk knife he carried was a fixed blade, not a folder. I chose this old book dated 1862 as a backdrop for Rik's knife since that was the general time when Nessmuk was most active. I hope to learn more over time but that's what I know so far.
The quality of Rik's work is well known. Few makers can combine top-notch technical skills with gifted artistry to the degree that Rik can. Here's an overview picture of 'Humpy 2.'
