Over the long weekend I decided to try and make my own knife Nothing fancy just functional. I used a piece of 1095 steel. I took the Nessmuk design and modified it a bit. The blade is roughly 1/8" thick, 3.5" long and overall about 8". Vinegar acid etched. I used some scrap Goncalo Alves for the scales. Standard brass bolsters. First try at a handmade leather sheath. Boiled Linseed Oil finish. Final buff with the wife's nail buffer. Just learning. Comments welcome.

what did you learn, making this knife?

what did you learn, making this knife?

I learned that knife making is a B*tch! The devil is in the details. I'm still learning about grinds. But end of the day, it's mine. That is worth the pain, the price and sweat.

What is the intended use of this blade shape?

I wanted a general purpose blade that I can use around my property. I had been researching blade shapes and liked the Nessmuk shape but I wanted it more compact. The way it turned out it is very well balanced and fills my hand well. I was looking at the Kephart shape and really liked that. Maybe next one.
