Nessmukesque Bug Repellent

Very cool, thanks for the post bro. I'll have to look into this.

Is it sticky when applied?

cool link man! thanks for the info. how was your pot affected afterwards?

Not affected at all, seemed to wash right off with a bit of regular dish soap. I stuck it in the dishwasher to make sure, though.

It didn't seem to be. I've only applied small amounts so far, but from what I can tell from that, no. It's just like any other sort of skin cream or lotion - it dries right up.

your timing could not be more useful, as I think the mosquitos around here actually like the bug repellent. Ive been using everything, from regular OFF, to Sawyers, to bens? (orange bottle, 100% deet), a thermacel... and the the mosquitos are really thick around here this year, as well as the ticks.

I read your article, does this work on ticks, and chiggers as well? If not, do you know anything that does work.

I think the deet works as far as keeping them from biting, havent had one bite me yet, that I am aware of (have not had to pull any out of the skin) but they crawl all over.

so by working, I am referring to keeping them off of you?

some people hate spiders, some snakes, etc. I hate insects, Not all but most...

Thanks

Just to let you guys know, this is the original poster, but under a new username. I am probably going to pay for a membership some time in the near future, so I wanted a name I would be happy with for a while longer.

It should. According to my research on the different properties of the essential oils I used, the eucalyptus in the mixture should work for ticks. I'm not sure about chiggers - are they similar to ticks?

As for whether it will actually keep them off of you as opposed to just preventing them from biting, I'm honestly not sure. I haven't had a chance to field test this mixture yet. It would appear that it should keep them off, because the odors from the eucalyptus are supposed to repel them. That is, though, what DEET is supposed to do, so that is why I am unsure.

Hope it works out for you.

I've been meaning to try this out and now you've done the leg work for me. :D I'm gonna give it a shot.

Anyone know how toxic pennyroyal actually is via absorption? Seems you can get the stuff online.

There are some areas where the old ways are best, some where it's a matter of preference, and some where new technology has real benefits.

I think that, when it comes to bug repellent, DEET is compelling, in comparison to the traditional, natural alternatives.

Yes, it melts plastic. Yes, there may be reasonable questions about its toxicity. But study after study (as well as my personal experiences) has shown DEET is the most effective bug repellent available.

And, it's not just a matter of comfort. Speaking as someone who nearly died from a dread disease picked up from a tick bite, speaking as someone who spent years paying off the medical bills associated with that incident, speaking as someone who still suffers a lot of possibly permanent damage from that incident, I urge you not to mess around with bites which could be carrying nasty diseases, not to mess around with using less than the most effective bug repellent available.

Even if it may be somewhat toxic, the consequences of the alternatives could be far worse.

Here's a pic of me, at the onset, before it got REALLY bad. Keep this picture in mind, when you choose between traditional, natural bug repellents and modern ones:

Evolute was that from a single tick bite?

Are you allergic to them?

What disease is this exactly?

Thanks Evolute.

For all intensive purposes, it's not toxic. When you down a whole 30 mL bottle, then it's toxic. Its LD50 is really no different from most of the other essential oils that you can get with no trouble. Pennyroyal has just gotten a bad rep due to being a supposed abortifacient, so everyone lists it as outright poisonous. The peppermint and eucalyptus oils are just as toxic as the pennyroyal. This in mind, all it means is don't put any of these things in your mouth! Absorption isn't really an issue.

Huh - I didn't even see pot in the ingredients list...

Does it make the bugs too high to bite?

TF

I wonder if this would work...:D

Thanks for the input. I've never had a problem with tics where I live I'm more interested in skeeters. I was in Portland on the 4th and was getting eaten alive. IN THE CITY!

Thanks for this post.
Are you planning any side-by-side testing with commercial bug repellents?

That's not a bad idea. I never even thought of that. Do one day/night with the DEET on, see how it goes and let it wear off. Then do the rest of the trip with this stuff. I'll probably do that.

or do one side of the body with deet and the other side with this mixture to ensure consistency of exposure to the bugs?
