Pouches can be very handy things. I first made net bags like this to fill with suet to attract woodpeckers. I soon discovered they are handy carriers for anything that doesn't slip through the meshes. I used a 3/4" wide gauge.

Australian Aboriginals used to make "dilly bags" natted bags that were used to carry literally everything , as well as to process some of the native foods that needed leeching before eating .
The knotting and weaving skills are pretty well dead now , but its good to see people still rediscovering the art :)

some inspirational pics :)

I cheat , I have a couple fish holder bags , the ones you can keep you catch live in the water with . They fit enough of the "Chessnuts" from Cook Town area that they can be leeched in running water for 24 hours or so , then mashed into dough and cooked as bread and feed a family .

Myal, was there any tradition of these dilly bags being made by men or women or both?

My experience , everyone used dilly bags . Women used the big ones for carrying gear , and leaching food to get the toxins out , the Maubin ( spelling I am not sure of but he was both healer and assassin by bone pointing ) used a special one made from human hair spun then knotted into a bag , he carried special things in it no one was allowed to know what they were tho .

I have only seen them made by women . I think tho that like most things , if there are no girls around to do the " girls work " then the men will , its a needed item , its going to have to come from somewhere .

The knots and patterns used tho in some bags are special , the history of that girls family and her own story . At least this is what I was told by a couple older ladies .

I have to add a disclaimer tho , what I have seen and learned by being with different peoples , does differ at times with official govt approved recorded history . It also differes tribe to tribe .

One of my favorite mesh bag uses: canoe/kayak/float tube pack anchor. It weighs an ounce or so to carry, but after you fill it with rocks.....

Stay sharp,
