oof... I just accidentally deleted the almost finished version of this post. Now I have to do it again.

The Never Ending GAW Continues!

Interest in this ongoing GAW has waned in recent years. I remember quite a bit of participation a few years back when eric brinkerhoff eric brinkerhoff put a pair of handmade traditional fixed blades into the box. Unfortunately, I don't have anything that nice to throw in, but I tried to focus on adding knives that I thought would be more desirable to more members while reducing the overall number of knives in the box. The trick is when people replace what they take with equal or greater value, it is easier to replace one nice knife with eight beaters. There are still a number of knives in the box I think could be culled, but I am still trying to figure out what to do with the ones I got when 315 315 winnowed the old box. I only reduced the overall count by 1 knife, but if future recipients can also strive to lower the count while maintaining or increasing value, maybe we can stop the cycle of box bloat and culling.

What My Kids Picked

My son chose the green Boker. My oldest daughter (Abby) chose the other three. My youngest daughter wasn't interested. Abby picked the Buck on its own merits, but she wanted the Old Timers so that she could make this set:

I mean, how could I say no to helping her make such a nice Old Timer Stockman set.

What I added

I don't have a lot of knives that I thought would excite folks on the Porch to participate. My list of more desirable knives was short: 1) My Annual Forum Knives (not giving any of them up); 2) My Guardians Lambsfoot (it is one of three traditionals that actually gets pocket time, not letting it go); 3) My Tidioute Whaler (it might be impractical, but I am never letting that one go); 4) My GEC Urban Jack (newest knife, one of three traditionals that actually gets pocket time, not letting it go); 5) My Beer Scout (one of my favorites, it was given to me by Wurrwulf Wurrwulf back in 2016, and it has been one of my favorites since, but I haven't carried it in years); and 6) My Northwoods Muskrat in Italian Jigged Bone (hands down, the most beautiful traditional knife I own, no competition, given to me by Leslie Tomville Leslie Tomville in 2018).

I decided to give away the Beer Scout since I still had the original tube, and the pocket slip I carried it in. I haven't carried it in years, and my stomach and beer don't get along anymore. Folks seem to like them. And while the blade does have a patina from being used and carried, I assure you it has only actually cut things a few times. It still has the original factory edge, even after eight years. All the more reason to let it go.

I decided to give away the Northwoods Muskrat because it is so beautiful that I have never been willing to carry it or use it. I still have the factory box and slip it came with, but all I ever do is occasionally pull it out and stare at the covers (so nice). I'm never going to carry it. It lives in my safe. And I am short on knife storage space right now, so time to let it go.

I picked the Boker trapper (given to me by r redden r redden back in 2018) because it is a solid user that I never use. It has pepper spots and a splotch on one bolster, but it is a good quality knife with it's entire use-life ahead of it. Just not with me.

All of my additions are knives that were given to me by Porch folks that I have loved for years. Now I hope other Porch folks can love them for a while.

You're a capital fellow, my friend, and a brave one. This is an easy thread to pass over usually, simply because of the "bloat" you mentioned. I like the idea of upping the value of its contents, though I am not overly confident that it will persist.

That said, if more folks chipped in some higher quality pieces now and then, it could be one of those coveted parcels that generates a lot more interest.

I have some great pieces to contribute so please count me in and I'll burn up that first spot that no one wants to take. ;)

Yeah, I don't have a lot of confidence it will persist, but if enough of us try, maybe we could make it into something everyone wants to get their hands on. There are some nice knives in there. I thought for sure one of my kids would jump at the Buck 110 (since that was the knife I most wanted as a kid), but none of them did. The Marbles lockback might not be an expensive knife, but it is really a nice looking knife. The Benchmade slipjoint is very nice, in a modern-traditional kinda way. I also was sorely tempted by the BPS friction folder (I'd like to buy a Ukrainian made knife myself sometime soon). I also really liked that MOP George Wostenholm I*XL knife.

We need to figure out a way to make this a bigger thing again! Last round I gave up most of my stuff but I do have a lot left. Not GECs or high-dollar stuff but that has never been the intention of this.
I appreciate mrknife mrknife and the 88 rounds :)

The traveling library is a chance for every one to enjoy something new, something different, regardless of price point. As the wise man says, traditional knives are good for you!

I'll enter yours if you'll enter mine
Alright, I entered yours (I hadn't entered earlier because my only non-sodbuster Case knife was a particularly sentimental knife, but I bought some Case BSA knives for my memorial GAW, and no one picked them, so I have nice ones I can part with now).

Well so far we've managed to triple the participation from the last round. Three entries! We'll see if anyone else decides to enter. If no one else chimes in over the weekend, I'll pick a winner on Monday.

Current entries:
Pàdruig Pàdruig
Jakeywax31 Jakeywax31
Boattale Boattale

Wow! Participation doubled at the last minute!

So the final entries slate is:
1 Pàdruig
2 Jakeywax31
3 Boattale
4 CujiWuji
5 holo07
6 TheJon

Random number generator says:
2

Congratulations Jakeywax31 Jakeywax31 You've won the box-o-knives. If you message me with your address, I will get the box mailed off as soon as I can.
