and think I would like a 110 or 112 folder of some kind with nice wood.

Does that happen? I mean is something like that available in a deep light colored wood? Maybe a light maple burl or the like?

or any really beautiful wood for the sides.

What steel does Buck use?

Thanks for your advice!

The 110 in its stock version can have some really nice wood. I have had a couple from wal-mart, and one I got at AG Russells grand opening, and all had very nice wood with very defined patterns in the wood. They use 420HC for blade steel.

If you want more, then go to Bucks website, and go to the custom shop. You can design your own 110 with choice of many different handle materials, and blade steels. Different blade finishes are also avaliable. One way or another you should be able to get a 110/112 just how you want it.

SON! You can get any 110 you want at Pete's Custom Knife Shoppe!

(Sadly, 112s are not an option yet.)

The Buck custom site is very cool! I get to try different woods, bolsters, rivets or not, type blade material color blade, damascus etc! and get to see what it would look like and the cost!

Very cool! Are the rivets just a cosmetic difference?

how about: Asian waterbuffalo handle material
BG-42 Satin finish blade
No Finger grooves on handle
No Serration on blade
Nickel Bolsters
No Rivets
$112.

Think it is a nice choice for a first Buck? I am considering the damascus blade instead of BG42 also. opinion?

Cheaper than a lot of my knives. and I didnt get so much choice in them!

I agree totally, the custom site is cool, but I have a related question. What about the damascus? Is it real (folded etc.) or etched? How does it hold up as far as steel goes? In general I like to buy knives that are pleasant to look at (at least to me) but that also are functional. Bottom line, is the damascus 110 a show piece or can you actually use it?

BUCK uses Darrel Maier(sp?) damascus for its blades, it doesn't get much better than that. But be warned its sharp!

I took the advice of Richard & mnblade and visited Pete's Custom Knife Shop - ordered my 1st custom Buck 110. Then ordered a Buck rosewood Alpha Hunter folder to boot! Thanks for the info, guys!

yep. I think my first Buck should be a good one. I am getting the Damascus.

I wonder, is damascus as strong as 440, or ats34? I mean is it ok to actually use the blade? and how do you care for it properly? keep oiled and such?

thanks
