Never Satisfied with My Carry Method

Since I got back into knives I've not totally settled on a carry method.
Most of the time it was with the pocket clip in my right side pocket.
But I found it interfered with me getting my wallet. Then the back pocket,
but sometimes I'd feel it too much when sitting. I tried belt carry, nice,
but more of a hassle and not all my knives use sheaths. Then in waste
band, pretty nice option, but doesn't work well with all knives. Now my
latest endeavor is trying to carry without the clip at all, just in my pocket.
It's not too bad, but with thicker folders it won't work for me.

Just seeing if any of you guys are OCD with your carry or if you've settled
on something. If so, what is it and why?

You could try carrying your wallet in another pocket.
Personally I use my right front pocket for knives only and my keys above that in the change pocket and keep my wallet in my left front pocket .

RIGHT FRONT POCKET: My folder (mostly a BM Nitrous Stryker Mini or BM 707 Sequel).
LEFT FRONT POCKET: Keys (with SAK Classic and mini flashlight, USB-memory.
RIGHT BAC POCKET: Wallet
LEFT BACK POCKET: Empty.
It´s as simple as that.

I carry in back right pocket, all the way to the right side (closest to right hand) with my wallet back there as well.

but it helps that I don't have a brick of a wallet, I use a big skinny, its super thin, and the millie fits just fine with it back there.

I carry a folder horizontally between the third and fourth button (from the top) on the placket of a dress shirt. This works out particularly well if you are sitting/driving.

My Umnumzaan in a CRK calfskin sheath RF pocket.
My Vic Climber vertical in RR pocket next to my wallet.

On the weekends, I also have my Nyala in sheath in LF pocket with the extra long stock lanyard hanging out to help retrieve it.

This works for me.

It took a while (years) to come up with this configuration - so I feel your pain.

I have a Big Skinny too because I'm so particular about how things carry.
Tried it in my rear pocket but still wasn't comfortable. Perhaps I need to
lower my standards :D

Great, yet another option to play with! Sounds good, but looks like you
need a good clip on a light knife.

i prefer the belt pouch carry. you might even forget its there..i tried the clips and it does get in the way.

joey

I personally carry Tip up blades on my right hand side and tip down blades on my left hand side. I do this because the blade is always against my pocket and their is no chance of the blade coming out. The blade had came out before, and I end up cutting myself trying to get my phone...

Interesting dilemma. Whether you're carrying knives or handguns, any carry is a compromise. Also, you need to consider if the knife you're carrying is just a tool & would need to be a SD tool, also. By that I mean that certain types of carry are not quick. Back pocket in particular, isn't terribly quick, but neither is IWB usually, because it's under clothes.

It sounds like carrying in your side pocket (?) is your best choice. You stated the only downside was that you like to carry your wallet there. Why not move your wallet to one of your back pockets?

Good luck.

Zoid, I'm in the same boat. I carry a bunch of stuff, and am constantly trying to figure out the most efficient way of doing it. Pistol, Blackberry, folder, SAK, Sharpie, keys, wallet, whistle, light.

One thing that helps is to find the smallest items that do the job. Smaller means less of a hassle to carry. This is true for the knife, as well. For most of us, a smaller knife will do the trick 99% of the time. A smaller knife that is clipped in the pocket interferes less with getting your hand in there for other stuff.

If you want or need a bigger knife, a dedicated belt sheath would do the trick. Maybe a belt sheath for each knife you carry, and if you have too many knives for the number of sheaths you would have to buy, consider thinning the herd.

I like a drop in type belt sheath. I'll cut the flap off of a Buck 110 holster and use a Sharpie to mask the "wound". Works great. Ends up looking sorta like the one below. I would give attribution if I knew who the maker was:

Couple different setups depending on jeans/khakis or shorts

Jeans/Pants:

IWB- Sig 229
OWB- Extra mag
Right Front Pocket- CRKT folder clipped on, keys and Leatherman Micra inside pocket.
Left Front Pocket- iPhone 4
Cargo pocket- CLEAR 4G WiFi

Shorts:

IWB- Smith and Wesson M&P9c
Right Front Pocket- CRKT Folder clipped on, keys and leatherman micra inside pocket
Left Front Pocket- iPhone 4
Cargo pocket- CLEAR 4G WiFi

Wallet in rear for either pants or shorts.

I feel your pain as well but I just carry my wallet, keys, flashlight, small pad o' paper, pen, change, etc. in my pannier (I commute by bicycle). I live in a high crime area and have never had any trouble with theft of my bag as I'm almost always holding it (and I'm not a small guy...that prob. helps). This leaves my knife as the only thing in my pockets which feels reaaally nice. Perhaps look into getting a Maxpedition versipack or something similar to carry. I can't be the only guy who can't stand carrying a lot of gear on his person.....just a thought.

wow, this is a strange thread. anything less than a FB with a 6"+ blade has never remotely been an issue. it's not until i get up to about 11+ inches that i even have to think about it.

clip folder go in the right front pocket, along with cash, wallet goes in right back pocket by itself, keys go in left back pocket, cell phone goes in right front pocket. never seemed that tricky to me.

i normally don't carry a folder. i carry a FB with an overall length of apx 9.5" in a 2Munkeez IWB behind my strong side hip and forget it's there most of the time.

thats chioce cable puerto rico thanks i did not know that. but im reminded every month to pay the freaking bill

I'm also pretty bad with this. I will carry my folders without their clips on in my jacket pockets. In the summer I clip my smaller folders to my front pockets and my larger ones to my cargo pockets. Or I'll just throw some of the smaller folders right in the front pocket unclipped if they have a clip.

It´s as simple as that.

USB stick is in right front watch pocket.
To left front pocket: add dirty handkerchief.
To keychain: add small keychain knife
Leatherman Charge on belt, right.
During long car drives the wallet moves to coat pocket or next to handbrake.

A bit less simple but it works.

RFP: Wallet/Lrg Folder
LFP: Cell/Sm Folder/Pen
RBP: Gum (React 5)
LBP: Notepad
Belt: Leatherman Supertool 300 or sometimes Maxpedition Janus

I use a Mustang webbing belt pouch for my knife. I have to carry two big sets of keys around (home and work) and putting them both in one pocket just isn't gonna happen.

I'm always looking to improve, but for now it's the most convenient way for me.
