Hi all!
Just received an example and it is gorgeous, wonderfully assembled and finished, but...
This has to be the dirtiest knife I have ever been sent straight from Buck. The centering was a bit off before I washed the chunks of compound out of the knife.
I am not upset, but just noting the fact.
Hope you all are well and happy.

I think it's a roll of the dice. I got the 110 and 112 nickel silver drop points. The 110 was gritty, but everything about the 112 was gorgeous. Some dish soap, old toothbrush, and a lot of hot water and the 110 was in business. Last year, I got a 111 web exclusive that was truly filthy, but it cleaned up just fine.

I think of it as a new bonding experience, I often inadvertently cut myself in the process to truly make the knife one of my own.

Most Buck Knives that I have received come with polishing compound on/in them. Early on I made it my normal ritual to clean the knife once received. This allows me to thoroughly inspect the knife as well. It's not just the daily knives either, some of the Limited Production, Limited Factory Run, and Legacy Collection knives I have received arrives with complimentary used polishing compound on/in them too.

I agree, 100%.
I am not upset in any way, but the amount was a first. Literal chunks of compound came out during the bath and it is still seeping blackness after some mineral oil. Do you think it is residue from the sanding of the scales? I mean it is black and I can't imagine it would come from the steel / nickel silver during buffing.

That compound gets into every nook and cranny along with all the sawdust and metal shavings. The compound turns black when used.

My exact experience. 110 came gritty in terms of blade travel, but was easily cleaned. 112 was almost flawless (I still cleaned and oiled it). The nickel silver drop point 112 is now my all time favorite knife, just love it. I find I have to clean and oil all new knives, regardless of the manufacturer. The dark grey and black residue that comes out (metal shavings, compound, etc) proves it to me.
