Just picked it up(pic in back seat of truck) Mossberg 500 , $420 out the door...seem like a pretty decent 12gauge.:D 18.5" barrel 6shot

Gorgeous. I saw one just like it in Cabela's but in the Mariner version without the standoff adapter going for $500...should've picked it up :( It begs for a Docter Optic red dot too.

i like it, i have a strap like that on my ithaca 20 gauge riot gun (strap on the pump) and it really helps imho, ya dont see 'em on many.

nice shotgun thopugh, how do ya like the AR15 style stock??

Mossberg has a rep for making good, hard working shotguns, I am sure you will both enjoy shooting it as well as knowing you can depend on it to protect your loved ones.

Pretty cool! What's that shell holder setup feel like up against your cheek when you fire it?

Andy

I don't know about anyone else, but I make it a habit of keeping any part of a shotgun off of directly touching my face, I just prefer not to get that shock to the jaw.

I have a High Standard Flight King (K1200, 20", CYL, rifle sights, deluxe walnut, made in Hamden CT between 1962-4 IIRC ), the superior predecessor of the Mossberg 500 series (It has a steel reciever rather than alloy, increased weight soaks up more recoil). Very easy to load 'military style' (of course 870 12's are still pretty easy too) The action design is solid, though I believe the High Standard action tends to be a bit smoother than the Mossberg's. I believe the 500's retain the lock ring at the front of the forearm- that is one weak-spot on both the HS and the Mossberg. I had to loc-tite mine. I looked at a Mossberg with the telestock (no muzzle device) on it. It came up surprisingly nice. The one I looked at (8-12 months ago) was tagged $350 (I forget if it was new or if it was a like new trade-in). I thougt it was a tad much for 12 gauge riot gun- especially when my High Standard cost $105.

Not have cheek weld while shooting a shotgun? I went through a case of 12g 7.5's in AL three weeks ago and a over a case of 3" BB's and 2's two weeks ago in Canada. My cheek was fine. I do shoot a Beretta semi so it does absorb some of the recoil.

the basic mossberg 88 was $185+tax...but it looked so plain jane I never even took it off of the shelf. all add-ons get Loc-tighted...or they loosen up and fall off.

I may at a later date go back and pick up the Maverick88 12ga. and have it modified to a 3rnd. compact 12ga. and pay the $5 tax stamp & modify'n fees, that would be freaking Sweet !!

Hang on a minute. The $5 tax is to transfer an AOW. To make one is $200. Might as well make it a SBS for that money, so you can stick a stock on it if you want.

Correct, once an eighteen inch ( or longer) barrel has been put on the receiver it is a $200.00 tax stamp to convert it. The ones that are sold on a $5.00 Any Other Weapon stamp are built on new receivers that have never had a barrel on them. The manufacturers that do these buy the receivers direct from the company that makes the receivers then build then guns up.

Technically, those title 1 (18"+ BBL, 26"+OAL) Pistol Grip Only shotguns are manufactured as and transfer as pistols (for federal purposes at least). There is no upper limit on the barrel length of a pistol. Since they have never had a buttstock on them, they are pistols, not shotguns. Thus, an SOT can make one into a AOW on a Form 2 and transfer it on a $5 form 4. Form 1'ing anything costs a non-SOT $200. I believe Serbu is (or was at least) using complete PGO hosts for his builds, not stripped receivers. I can think of other smaller 07/02s that definetely do it that way.

Yep. The buttstock is the defining factor. It has to do with the ATF regs defining a shotgun as being "designed or redesigned to be fired from the shoulder. . ." So, once you put a buttstock on a receiver, it will henceforth be a shotgun.

Interesting side note: How did all this NFA nonsense come about, you ask? This is to be taken with a grain of salt, since I've seen no verifying documentation.

Back when they were drafting the NFA, pistols were one of the items to be restricted and taxed. And of course, they didn't want folks cutting down rifles and shotguns to make pistol facsimiles, so the barrel and overall length restrictions were added. Then, they realized that they couldn't realistically restrict pistols, so that provision was dropped. The SBS/SBR stuff got left in, for whatever reason, which is why it's now a pain in the butt to procure a Mad Max style shorty double. Damn the luck.
