Anyone tried the new version with 60-62 hrc compared to the old one? How does it hold up in toughness with a much harder heat treat?

Unless you can get more info from Benchmade, your best resource will probably be the Crucible CPM 3V datasheet, which shows how impact toughness will change for different Crucible recommended heat treatments (which may not be what Benchmade is using).

If you don’t know how to interpret Charpy v-notch impact toughness, I would say that a 30 ft-lbs is generally the minimum requirement for structural steel applications. Even at the specified maximum of 62 HRC, Benchmade’s CPM 3V should have a minimum impact toughness of about 40 ft-lbs. In my opinion, this is likely more than adequate for any kind of chopping or batoning that someone might do with this knife.

For what it is worth, I recently received a Puukko with the new heat treatment. I did some wood carving, chopping, and prying. I did not experience any issues.

How do you know that the Puukko you received was one with the new heat treat? Are there any markings on the knife or the packaging that show production date or somehow distinguish the newer from the older blades?

The production date on the box is from Feb 2020.
