Anyone have the new/improved 2002 Commander (not the TAG Super Commander) yet for any period of time? Any noticeable differences in EDC and use? Are they all over dealers shelves or hit and miss?

I've had one for a few weeks. I like it better than the older version. Performance improvement is not really noticeable but you certainly can feel the wider handle. From the finger recess on back to the butt of the handle is a bit wider than previous Commanders. What this means is the knife fills your grip more. The liner lock bar has been made shorter and wider, thus changing the angle at which it engages the tang and also increases the pressure resulting in a tighter lock up. You have to press on the lock bar harder than you do with the older Commanders. And due to the fact that the handle spacer is lengthened, the handle feels more solid.

As far as dealers having the '02 versions, it is hit or miss. A lot of them may have the '01 or even some '00 ones in stock. Good thing is you can have them check the year on the blade.

IMHO Emerson Knives made a great knife even better. Little things do mean a lot!

I have and they are really sweet.

In order of preference, I'd have to say:

'98 - Early '99 Commander (First Gen)
'02 - Commander (Third Gen)
Late '99 - '01 Commander (Second Gen)

Thanks for the info guys.

I carry a 2000 and have a Super-Commander inbound. I think that the '02 would have been a better choice. I liked it when I played with it at SHOT. You're right, the little things do mean something - the ceratinly gave the knife a better feel and the lock-up seemed more secure.

I wrestled with the purchase decision of the $369.00 Super Commander as it seemed/seems pricey. As their can't be such a sizable difference in price attributable to increased materials and/or design, it better have Sebenza + fit 'n finish. On the one hand I thought it would be a great user, yet felt I should just keep it as a collector. With reare exception, however, my whole collection is user knives. Maybe the '02 will be my choice and the Super will be returned. I'll let you know.

They are filtering to dealers. A buddy of mine just showed me a Commander he'd picked up locally and sure enough 2002 Third Gen. Damn those are nice.
