Yeah... I was a -little- excited to see the loooong triangular box in my room... My parents tried to hide it from me... This time, maybe they were psychic... Anyway, I spotted it right away and opened it up. Was -very- excited by now, and was carelessly... Let me say that again... CARELESSLY... Tearing the newspaper off of it. Now, all was good until about the time when I came to tearing the newspaper off of the handle... All of the other paper was off, but not the handle's paper... There was tape involved too... Now, here's where I'm a little ashamed... I thought I could take it off with my bare hands, without the assistance of a knife... I know... I know... Not using a knife when a knife's use is welcomed... I've shamed myself... Anyway, one tug kinda tugged a little too much, exposing a vicious little piece of blade that decided to get acquainted with its new owner... Mr. Kobra, meet Mr. Gingerich's index finger... The khuk seemed happy in a sadistic way while the finger cried red tears... Five stitches later, and back home I come to finally admire this thing...

WOW! Once again, like with all other khuks, a grin crept to my face, though this time, the grin crept just a little faster... Man is that ever an intimidating blade... I'm very wary of it every time I pick it up. Kumar made... Just a beaty. The Sirupati's nothing to complain about either... Though I'm not quite sure who made it... R.R. initials and a swastika... A little help?

Oh... One more thing... I know how a lot of HI khukuris come as dull as a post, or close to it... Well... Mr. Kobra could shave when I took it out of the package... Bloomin' sharp, that thing is... I'll have to wait until tomorrow when there's still daylight to clear some brush with it.

Lesson learned today... Will always remember that day... Got a laugh out of my female friend when I called her... "Guess what!!! I got my 25" khukuri, and y'know what came with it? Five stitches!"

LOL good story. 25" kobras are great. RR is known as the Amtrack kami, I'm not sure what his given name is. He does good work, I'm working on a Kumar Karda he made right now. Have fun with your kobra and no more stitches!!

Oh, trust me. This incident has changed me for sure... Always will I remember... And if I don't remember, I just will have to look at my finger again... Thanks for the info on the kami. That was my guess, but I couldn't be sure without someone else giving some real verification...

I bet scars from HI khukuri's are a bit more special too
Only if the scar runs from the corner of your mouth to the corner of your eye and obtained in a duel. :p ;) :D ;)

My most notable scar from a khuk isn't readily seen, it's between my 3rd and 4th toes on my left/right foot, hell I can't even remember now:rolleyes: , dropped the as forged blade one day when I went too sleep with it in my lap.
I count myself fortunate that I still have my toes! Loseing ones toe's would definitely be a scar that would be special!  :D ;)

Wow... Now there's an alarm to wake up to... I'm glad this thread brings back fond memories of past dumb mistakes we've made, ending with less blood in our systems... Yes, this scar will be a special one... I can already tell that this kobra's a scrapper... As is the 12" sirupati... It's nice and quick... Mmm... Just superb.

There's always the crosshair in a circle scar but to get those you have to be lucky, you only get those one out of 5 duels.

why do i have the imagine of danny trejo stuck in my head now. :D :D

The khukuri marked you. It is now yours :)
Nothing teaches respect for a blade like a few stitches...

Glad to hear that 25"er didn't inflict any more damage than 5 stitches, Hamon:) the 25" kobra is one of my fav khuks of all time. I've got one made Kumar as well and its special to me being that he designed it an all. The Amtrak kami is a very good bladesmith. he's quickly climbing up to be one of my favs after Kumar. As a matter of fact, my first blade by him was a 12" siru.
Its kinda funny how HI products will listen to you even when you aren't talking to them. I had a funny, but painful experience with my Everest Kat this morning. I was laying in bed. it was 6 am and i DID NOT want to get out from under the covers and get up to do my 100 sit ups and 250 push ups. Ya know, just one of those days where you dread getting up. I finally swing my legs out from under the covers and i catch a glimpse of the sword tucked neatly away in its scabbard next to my bed. I had just been working on etching the blade with various acidic products last night. I wanted to see if it had rusted or oxidized a bit from the acid so i sat on my bed sleepy eyed and looking for any excuse to delay my exercises and pulled the first 6 inches out of the scabbard to check for any rust. Placed my thumb to the blades edge to check the sharpness. It was at that time that they blade suddenly snapped back into its scabbard...not before it drug 3 inches of its sharp toothy edge down the fleshy tip of my thumb. I could have tipped the scabbard down a bit (read i probably did), but it sure flet like that blade snapped back in all by itself. I've never been cut by it except for this time. Maybe it hates its new gray finish. maybe it likes it and wanted to give me a little kiss;) Needless to say, i got out of my exercises since i had to spend 15 mins getting the d@mn thing to quit bleeding. Probably needed a stitch or two, but i think it'll be alright. Be careful what you wish for around those things;)
Once again, great snag on the 25" and 12". You'll love 'em:)

I have no pics of it, nor a digital camera... I'll just tell you that it's a nice gash a little less than half way through my index finger (thanks, bone), which has five nice stitches in it. The doctor whistled while he worked, which I found very cool.

Man, do I ever have respect for this baby now... Yeesh... I think about it every time I pick it up, and will think about it for months...

As for you, Steely, it must've been a subconscious way of keeping from doing exercises... Bravo on that one. :D

been bitten way too many times to keep track......about every third or fourth manages to get me while I'm workin' on 'em and I've done well over a hundred....:(

Just last night, was packing up some khukuri blanks (have 7 "in the works") to take with me to do some reconditioning. Sure enough - one of 'em bit me. (I think it was yours, JP ;)) Right on the pointer finger of my right hand. A little superglue took care of it last night, but all day today has been "type, type, type, *ouch*...type, type, *ouch*....."

 :footinmou

I like the "finger cried red tears part".....

Congrats on your joining our new club.....Bandaid-dicts. :p

The only sharp thing that I have ever required stitches from was a one man crosscut that jumped out of the groove and ran across the top of my finger :(

The only other really bad cuts were when I caught my freshley sharpened Ganga Ram (came close to being bad enough for stitches) And when I closed my Microtech Socom Elite and my finger was a little too close to the blade. That one probably should have had a stitch.

Get minor cuts all the time, mostly from sharpening.

We had a few bloodies at the KHONVENTION didn't we y'all?

I got out safely...I think it was because I was the host. Karma works that way! :)

Yvsa, I'm sure if you'd lost some toes the Forum would have stepped up and raffled them off to pay for expenses.

Yeah... This wasn't a good week for me... I also lost the tip of my thumb to Mr. 18" AK... Hopefully I can last long enough to get these stitches out before I get bitten again... I'm trying to keep only one bandaid on my hands at one time... So far, I'm doing alright.

Hamon, I think you just about as bad as me when it comes to khuk bites;) I got bit again last night. thats kinda rare for me. i cut myself often, but not with khuks. This time had more to do with carelessness than anything. I was sharpening up my 22" GRS on a butcher's steel. Not running the steel along it, but bringing it down the steel. Not a bad way to sharpen a GRS, but it requires that you pay attention to what you are doing. I wasn't. I was too busy watching the Colts fumble the d@mn ball on the 1 yard line and the 3lb monster khuk glanced off the bottom and caught me on the thumb (same thumb that the sword bit) between the knuckle and the palm. Word to the wise...don't do that. Now i have a stiff mummy thumb and all its good for is doing a rather crappy impression of the Fonz. Ayyyyyyyy;)

With all this bloodshed, I almost feel like I am underachieving.

I got a slight bite ffrom my m-43, but only warning contact from the YCS. my old M-43 got me too, inn the same week. Apparently M-43s like the taste of me.
