Here’s what the new 3 pound forging hammer looks like... It's basically just trimmed down and rounded on the faces, same 4150 steel as the 4 pound. The eye is also the same as the 4 pound hammer.

Here’s older 4 pound hammer for comparison.

Thanks Salem.

Not really,... but I am thinking about making a little 2 or so pound bell shaped rounding hammer next.

The 4 pound is probably the biggest one I'll ever make.

Nathan Carothers did the machining and co-engineered them. Thanks Nathan!

Peters did the heat treat.

14 inch blacksmith handle 514AA replacements are available through House Handle.

Making these hammers and working with Tai has been a treat. While certainly not the easiest machining project to come through my door, I can't think of many projects that are more personally satisfying than helping make tools for smiths that I admire.

On a side note, I think my mail carrier might require some medical attention after all these flat rate boxes full of hammerheads...

Nathan, my carrier made me unload them. LOL

... no wonder my back aches.

Have you considered an angle pein? I have found that to be quite a desirable hammer many times.

No not really. One of the reasons I like the extra long peen is that there is enough clearance that you can hold it at any angle to the stock for drawing in length, spreading in width and anything in between. It's a different forging style, although the angle peens are fine if you like forging with them... I've just never been able to get used to the 45 degree angle, not a big fan of straight peens either...

Thanks Karl. Moving the metal primarily in the direction of the handle (or in line with the handle) using the cross peen, just seems more natural and easier to control to me.
