This isn't so much of an actual review, but I will let you know a few things about it.

I went to SMKW today to get one of the new 301s(it isn't called the 301, it is like dw or something)it is a 301 with beautiful dark wooden scales, a new shield, and a nice leather pocket clip pouch much like a William Henry.

I got to look at several and all were pretty good, some better than others fit wise. The one I bought is very tight and flush. The scales are a very nice wood that reminds me of Queen's birds eye maple only a little darker.

I really like this shield, it says BUCK and has an anvil above it with a little B in the middle of it, behind the buck and anvil is a dark green background. I think it is a little big, but IMHO it looks classy on this knife.

The leather clip pouch is vey nice leather with the same logo as the shield. It works well, but seems to add bulk IMO. I feel the knife in my pocket more while it is in the sheath, but it frees up the bottom of my pocket for change and also keeps it easy to get to and scratch free.

The edges were all very sharp and fairly even. It is sharp enough for me to use it as is without problems.

Sorry if this is old news, but I havn't heard anything about them yet on BF. I saw them in the catalog and drove 4 hours there and 4 hours back to get one:). They have several new models out in the newest catalog. Hurray Buck!!:thumbup:

BTW: the lady that helped me at the Buck counter was the nicest of all the people that I dealt with today, a little long winded maybe:D, but she really cared:thumbup:.

BJE,

Thanks for the review of the unknown and the lady sounds like she would fit in here...

That stock photo knife doesn't have a date stamp.
BJ, did you knife have one?
My tang stamp looks just like the one in the pic, except mine has a small upwards pointing arrow after "301". Not sure if that is a date stamp or not:confused:.

The upward pointing arrow is a 2008 date stamp. I really like the looks of this new Stockman, glad to hear the fit and finish is up to Bucks standards

I would say this line was above Buck's normal 301 standards. I have never gotten a bad 110, or the medium stockman I think it is the 303, but I have gotten several 301's that had serious/and or little problems. I have tried to get them from different time periods thinking maybe they just made a bad batch, but I have never been able to find one that was good enough for me to keep (until now). Most have had loose blades or blades that were too tight in the handle and wouldn't open without opening at least two at a time. The last one I looked at was at a local knife shop and it had a wobbly main blade and the grind was pretty bad on the spey blade. I have come to notice that all of the 301's I have handled had the spey blade edge sticks above the handle, I think this may be the way they are supposed to be, due to upswept grind on such a narrow blade?

Not downing Buck, I have never had any problems out of any of their other knives given the price point, but the 301's I seem to have bad luck with or are more prone to QC problems.

Wow,that's awsome!I want one :)
They are about the same price as the regular 301's. I think I paid around $35-$36 for mine, very affordable for a quality peice like this. Buck really hit this one out of the park.
