New 4.7 vs 5.1 vs old 4.1 **Pic Heavy**

Finally! The day I've been waiting for since discovering Survive! about 6 months ago. I have a 4.7 in hand!

Overall, I'm very impressed. When I got the 5.1, I was really surprised at the overall large size and heft of it. When reading through the specs, I got the impression that the 4.7 would only be slightly smaller than the 5.1. Essentially the same blade, minus the extra length attributed to the choil. But, my friends, I stand corrected. This 4.7 is a totally different knife.

For one, its got a much more neutral balance. The 5.1 is more blade heavy. Not terribly so, but to get the same perfect balance as the 4.7, I feel the need to grip it with the index finger in the choil. You may be thinking, duh, look at the specs.....But I'm one of those guys that can read length and weights all day long, but until I get them in hand, they don't really sink in.

The handle is a similar contour, and while almost the same length, it definitely is a little slimmer/more deeply contoured. Don't know if this is a good or bad thing yet. I've got larger hands with long fingers and the beefier handles usually fit me better. Heck, the barely countoured older 4.1 handle is nice in my book.

This 4.7 is a second but as usual with Survive!, there is not a flaw that I can find.

Yeah, yeah, Neil. Shut up and get to the pictures.....OK, but one last point. While the new finish is very pretty, uniform, and slick, I still love, love, love that older stonewash finish like on my necker and 4.1.
There's something about that reflecting (refracting?) of the light from different angles that reminds me of the cross-sections of meteorites or something. Best looking blade finish ever in my opinion. That's why, despite the newer handles, I'm still trying to buy up all the older m390 models I can!

Am I alone in missing that stonewashed finish? (Ellie/Guy please don't take offense!)

Close up of the natural canvas. Little more reddish than usual. No microtexturing unfortunately ;(

Finally, that stonewashed finish I love so much!

I work in an office environment daily, so I don't get out much to use them. I'll try the 4.7 some in the backyard this weekend.
I'll tell you what though....come this fall, those deer are going to feel like they're skinning themselves. I anticipate it to be like cutting through butter with a lightsaber!

Congrats Neil. Well done and thank you for sharing.

What kind of photo hosting service or website are you using? I need to migrate my pics onto a new site as I don't really like the photo hosting features here on BFs.

Yep, I gave up on the forum's own hosting service a while back. Too many restrictions on picture size.

I use Imgur and couldn't be happier. Posting the direct links in the thread is pretty easy. Still gotta watch picture size somewhat or it blows them up waaaaay too much.

Also thank you for your write up which I appreciated. This has compelled me to hold onto the 4.7 which I should be receiving in due course and letting go of both my 5.1's!

Your opinion of the choil is what put me in that frame of mind. With one Eff'ed up index finger, I should rather take really good care of the other one!

Also, my hands are probably not as big as you describe your hands, so maybe the 4.7 will be a perfect all around knife for me plus the GSO 6 which i have already ordered as a decent blade heavy chopping / batoning tool. Truth be told, I have always been a sucker for that spear point! Gorgeous, gorgeous knife.

I'm in a very similar situation. I had been waiting on getting the 4.7 in hand before deciding on whether to keep the 5.1. I've sold two others already over the course of the last few months.
This bone linen one was my "keeper". But, I'm not much of a camper and there are literally no forests around me where I need a chopper or heavy blade at all. Most I'd ever have to do is chop some flimsy mesquite branches out of my way walking to the deer blind. I love the heft in hand, but I honestly will probably never use it and should send it to a better home...

The majority of my fixed blades have hunting in mind and the 4.7 tops out, size-wise, my needs in that dept. Heck, unless I can get a moose hunt lined up, even the 4.1 or pre-ordered 3.5 is more than enough for our whitetails!

Great comparison neil944!
Now I wish I would've ordered the natural canvas instead of the bone linen on my 4.7.

I'm really glad to see where the balance is on the 4.7. With the solid handles, I was worried that these would be handle-heavy.

Great review & Pic's Neil.
The 5.1 & 4.7 Are both less than 3/16" thick ---which many knife guy's consider as ideal thickness for toughness & thin enough to slice well.
Combine this with the balance & great handle design--Sweetness!

Sweet blade! Thank you for the comparison pics. I'm really glad we're starting to see group shots of these.

Thanks man. While these Survives are thicker than most of my Bark Rivers. I've never felt they were at any disadvantage with regards to slicing capabilities. With Guy's laser-like sharpening skills. They seem to cut like a knife a mm or two thinner.

Thanks for the right up! I have a 4.7 ordered too, it sounds like the perfect all around knife to me. You never really know till you get it in your hands, but it may be enough for me to sell a few others off.

Thanks for taking the time to to this up Neil. I was thinking the same thing you were, the 4.7 might be great as it would be like the 5.1 with no choil. The same can be said with the 6 but retaining the blade length. I'm more excited to be my Cru forge 4.7 now.

And I also agree, the GSO is so sharp it does cut like a thinner blade.

Thanks for yte write up and pictures. Can't wait to get to hear how you like using them.

Where abouts are you dismembering mesquite trees? :) your welcome to send some to east Texas for my smoker.

Ha ha. I'm down in Corpus Christi. Other than palm trees, mesquite is about all we've got!
I didn't get to use it at all this weekend. Between a kid's b-day party on Sat. & about 10 inches of rain yesterday, the 4.7 didn't even leave the sheath :(

Once we dry out, I'm going to take it out and at least do some backyard Survive!n'. Maybe trim back the overgrown jungle back there b/c of all this rain!

Congrats on the new 4.7. I got to tell you I thought Guy was making a mistake by dropping the old GSO 5. But I just received a 4.7 this weekend and I think it's a better knife then the 5. Don't get me wrong if you took a 5 into the woods as your only knife you would be VERY happy. But the 4.7 just feels better and is a good mix of the old EDC 4 and 5.

Here it is with the 5 the 4.7 and new 5.1

The three different 4s (4.1, EDC4 and 4.7) plus a 5 and a new 5.1

The 4.1, 4.7 and 5

Great pics! I didn't realize just how much bigger the 5.1 is than the old 5.

I also like how you were able to focus on the contouring differences in the grips. The change in handle contour is the biggest difference between the new/old series imo.
Irregardless of blade lengths, heat treats, etc, the way the handle interacts with your hands is paramount and Guy did a great job with the change. It definitely "locks" into the hand better.

That handle on the 4.7 looks like you can really choke back on it and do some good chopping.
I might have to actually put a lanyard on mine with a pinky hole to see how it works out.
