New 551 Grip - won't get sharp on IdaHone... next step?

My new 551 Griptilian arrived fairly dull. I've tried sharpening it with a small IdaHone ceramic V-stick set-up, but to no avail. Hasn't made any difference.

I know I really need a primer on the best sharpening set-up to get going with, but I thought the IdaHone V-ceramic sticks would be sufficient for ahwile.

The IdaHone ceramic V-stick set-up has helped sharpen some of my other new folder blades. But it does tend to smooth out quickly during use with metal deposits, so I've cleaned it with Comet on a Scotch-brite scouring pad as that's the only cleaning means I can think of. And still, it just won't sharpen up my Griptilian 551 (154CM steel).

Am I asking too much of the IdaHone ceramic sticks? The manual says I should start with the steeper angle first, then move the sticks to a more open V position, but this set-up just ain't doin the job. Is the 154CM steel just more difficult to put a sharp edge on than other steels?

Can someone advise me on a good sharpener set-up to go to next. I know a lot of people recommend the SharpMaker... is that pretty much the best way to go next? Or something else... hopefully something less than about $70 or so?

Many thanks for helping me get going with sharpening my growing collection of nice knives!

DMT aligner... it will put a end to your problem.

knifenut... thanks for that recommendation. I will look into that. DO you know of a low priced/good source for the DMT Aligner?

Also, I'm wondering if I should try some 1500 grip paper wrapped around the ceramic sticks of my IdaHone... is that a reasonable approach if the ceramic is giving me no effect?

Amazon has the aligner in a combo set with every stone from XC to EEF for about $70

Sandpaper on a flat surface like wood or glass would be better than putting it on the rod.

I haven't looked lately, but you ought to be able to get that for around $45 at Cutlery Shoppe or Knifeworks.

Edit: didn't see you wrote EEF and not EF.

Looks like a great way to go. That's what I'll do. Thank you.
