Hello...

I just picked up a NIB 889SBMF in Coyote Brown. It seems to be a really impressive knife - solid, and well constructed. After some TLC, it now sports a wickedly sharp edge...but I don't really know anything about this thing.

I understand it's discontinued? Can you folks tell me anything about this knife? I did some googling but the only thing I can really find are advertisements for folks that don't have it in stock.

Thanks!

It was a collaboration between Buck and Strider knives. Kind of a licensed Buck made interpretation of a Strider custom folder.

I have the exact same knife, brown and all. I have heard some gripe about the liner lock, but I have had no issues at all. Mine also needed the edge touched up and is now very sharp. I liked it so much I bought another in green just to have another new one in reserve. To each his/her own, but i like this knife alot, it has held up very well.
Enjoy yours.

The 889 was discontinued, along with any remaining Buck/Strider models, in 2007 when the B/S partnership ended.

There was also an identical 882 model with 154cm steel and G10 scales.

Looks like there might be some danger associated with the liner lock.

I knew better than to think I was getting a SMF, but that's disappointing.

If yours is fine, don't sweat it.

Mine locked up like a bank vault.

D'oh! Both mine, and my buddy's black one (bought at the same time) will close with a light rap on the spine from a wooden hammer handle.

Oh, well. $50 wasted.

97 , I don't think you wasted your money.I have a black 889 .I carry sometimes.I like it becouse it spreads more peanut butter and sandwitch
spread than my slippies do.Mine was hard to open and close when I first got it.But it freed up after a while.Yours may lock up better with use.If not you can send it back to Buck and they will fix it right up.Good luck:thumbup:

I have a few Buck liner lockers, to include a couple of 889's. Have NEVER had one fold up on me. But then again I don't have a need to go beating on them with a hammer. I doubt you will have any problems as long as you are using it as intended.

I don't go around doing spine whacks with my 889 but I've never had an issue with the lock during use.

Hmmm...wonder why you don't baton anymore Messy ;)

Well, enough bad memories...
I have a few SBMF knives. Only one had a problem that I was able to fix myself. Love those knives.

97B, send it to Buck and you will have a great knife back in a few short weeks.

You don't think a lock that will fold from a little tap is unsafe?

No, not as long as I am using it like a knife is supposed to be used. Cutting away from my body. But you have to do what you have to do.... go to a frame locker or a lockback like the 110. Or like Goose said, send yours back to Buck for a tune up.

If I am doing something where I think a folder could cause me problems, I will shift to a fixed blade or use a different tool.
