New addition for BOB

Why does this weapon seem ideal for a city? Range? Penetration of walls?

What ammo would you plan on using?

That is very sweet. I really like the more traditional long guns as opposed to the AR-15 style. This bridges that gap nicely.

I love it,its perfect for the city because of the shorter barrel and all the neat tactical acceccorys you can put on the rail. And people wonder why all our wars are on foreign soil, forget the army be ware of americans for they have rights. it needs an XD in 40 for a little brother, best money I've spent on a gun.

its a .308 cal, and a 16 inch barrel, 37inch overall. Short and compact, shoots a sub 1 inch group at 100yrd, and of course it is the most reliable action, M1 Grand. As far as range, it is built as a close range combat weapon but still effective beyond a quarter of a mile easily. For Penitration, you can get military surplus armor peircing ammo at gun shows, but a standard 308 FMJ would penetrate almost anything you would be shooting at even most vests and trauma plates, so it would go through several walls with out a problem.
I would problably get what ever I could in large quanities, Mostly FMJ's. Ideal for cities because it is short enough to be used indoors and accurate enough for long distance outdoor shots. More punch than a 223 but you cannot carry as much ammo. It is also not too heavy, 10 lbs. So it could be carried easliy too.

It has a Sig P220 in .45 cal for a little bro. and a Mossberg 590 as a friend. But I have been looking into the XD's now that they come with the 'XD' gear too. I like them better than the Glock's.

Rounds that zip through walls can be rough on folks you were not aiming at. And FMJ's skip nicely off streets and sidewalks.

Glocks have an unsuported chamber. This makes them weaker, and several have reportedly blown up. i have had nothing but good experence with the glocks my dad owns, but i prefer the XD. I think XD's feel closer to an HK(but not quite) than a glock. I dont think he is going to worry about collateral damage if it comes down to putting that bad boy into action. close range self defence is sig p220 territory.

You could be you're right, but that might come better from the user -- whose responsibity it would be.

And it might not seem "collateral" to friends or relatives of the "collaterally" slain. At least, that's how it seems to work, except in comic books.

I will worry about collateral damage right before I squeeze the trigger;) . But untill then I will still load my clips with FMJ's. The reason is incase I do need to shoot through a vest, wall, or even a car to get a bad guy I want my bullet to do that. Collateral damage is just one of those things that exists no matter what you are shooting.

i like the m1a platform alot. it has a few downsides though. one you've already mentioned, weight of ammo. .308 is substantially heavier than 5.56 and 7.62x39, meaning you can't carry nearly as much. and considering that if the shtf, i'll be carrying a bob and a sidearm, weight is definately a consideration. i'm fairly young and physically capable, but there's no way i'm going to con myself into believing that carrying a 70lb loadout during an emergency is a good idea. you sacrifice way too much mobility.

the other main drawback is it doesn't have a pistol grip stock, which makes handling much more difficult. i love traditional stocks, but when you are in a combat situation, you can't beat a pistol grip stock. you may need a hand free to hang on to something (train, vehicle, etc.). or worse yet you may be injusred and have only one hand to fire with, and murphy tells us it will be your weak side.

living in a big city, i'd definately want a weapon more suited to urban warfare. something compact for ease of use and carry, lightweight (including ammo) and of reasonable caliber at ranges under 200 yards. i can't see the need for 1/4 mile shots in an urban setting.

You can get AR style stocks for them with pistol grips. As for the part of not being able to carry as much ammo......I guess just make every shot count. And the AR's in 223 are able to make quarter mile shots no problem, I am just impressed that it is able to do this with such a short barrel.

Old FBI issue MP10 (yes 10) in 10mm would give you the ultimate survival platform. it is a very acurate and high powered round in .40cal but this will run you $5,000+ so its out of my range at least. i personaly love the 10mm the only downside is cost of factory ammo.

1. They'r magazine's, not clips.
2. If you need to shoot throgh a car, you have time to get the hell out.
3. Collateral damage may is an accepted circumstance of battle. Citizens accidentaly shooting citizens can be problematic.
4. That thing looks a little heavy to lug around in a bag.

ammo availability is a problem. 10mm isn't abundant as there aren't any rifles in this caliber used on a large scale.

one of those carbon m4s would fit nicely i think! personally if the shtf i would suffice on foot with my sidearm only as weight would concern me more when covering long distances [trying to get home] . of course i would carry my trusty daypack with what i would need also but actually carrying any rifle unless your area is a hot zone would be unthinkable imho. now as far as safegaurding your home i think that new rifle of yours would be ideal, especially with the addition of a tac-light and or eotech sight / similar. when discussing this kind of topic it makes me think of the poor law abiding citizens in katrina having to deal with looters and such. if your prepared to hold the fort and have sufficient supplies[i do] having a good trusty long gun may be just the ticket. should probably be labeled a bug in gun instead of bug out .:D

Your right, bug out may not have been the right term, but if I do bug out its going with me.
