Hi fellow formites...

As I promised, I have photos of my newest friend... a fancy YCS... that arrived today. Here is a rundown:

It is made by Sanu (of course) and is lighter than Ashley. I
don't know how lighter, cuz I don't have a scale of any
kind. The finish on the blade seems to be brighter than
anything else I have (magic stone?) and everything seems to
be really good fit and finish wise. The inlaid diamonds and
yin yang are done quite well, and a semi white material
(horn?) is used for the diamonds... not blazing white like I
was afraid of. The tools are very well done, with one of the
kardas not being decorated... don't know the reason why
since they are both knives. They each have a slight recurve
to them, and the handles are just long enough for them to be
useful. The awl is also well done, with no decoration. There
is almost an edge on the three sides of the "blade," but I
don't know if it is supposed to be sharp or not. The sheath
fits very well, although it is a little large/bulky at the
top with all those tools to hold. Another sheath by Terry
might be called for with the separate sheath for the tools.

The blade is very even, with the fullers being nicely done.
The only thing with the blade that I can see on my first,
quick inspection is the tip isn't shaped evenly, giving it a
bent appearance (only slightly...but I noticed it). I think
that this could be brought back straight... but don't know.
I think I'd leave that to Terry.

The handle is a bit longer than others, which affords the
ability to grip it forward or slightly to the rear... the
difference being which fingers are behind the ring. first
two or three. I think Sanu did that to allow for the
diamonds (grip below or on them).

Now, I promised I'd do a better job with the photos... but I got some bad news regarding my studio today and it took all the fun out of it. So, though not down and dirty, they aren't upright and clean neither... I even forgot to get a couple of detail shots... maybe later...

Everyone have a good weekend...

Top pic looks like the YCS already took a bite out of the belt loop on the frog. \

Still dayum nice pix even if they're not upright and clean!!!!!
The white material in the inlays are made from bone Al and that's why they're not a dazzleing white.

"It is made by Sanu (of course) and is lighter than Ashley. I

I wonder if it's really lighter or if it's the balance making it feel lighter?
Of course a lot of the actual weight could depend on how deep the fullers are.

Are you gonna let the YCS stretch her legs as well when you take Jewel out for a run? :p  :D

Thanks Dave! I would love to be the official HI photographer... but it looks like I'm gonna lose everything next week :( . But that's okay... I've bounced back before... I just have to do it again :)
I just wish I could have done a better job shooting the YCS. I didn't have the concentration I needed...

Yvsa,

It does look like she took a bite out of the frog... that's that wonderful reflection coming off of her blade :D. That stuff is hard to photograph too.

She (we haven't talked about a name yet) definitely shouted "working gal" to me when I pulled her out of the sheath this afternoon! Oh my... is she ever sweet. And I love the longer karda too... actually, I love both.

She's not any better than Ashley... but no worse either... just different. Kind of like Brunettes and Redheads :D . Each has their place and time ;) .

Lose everything next week? This sounds serious. What's going on and how can we help?

I think everybody is in agreement that you should be the HI photographer. We have had some excellent photos taken and posted in the past but you're the pro.

"The sheath

When I get a new khukuri one of the 1st things I check after inspecting the blade and generalities is the placement of the tools in the back of the scabbard.
One one of my YCS's I turned both kardas back to back in their placement instead of the traditional way.
That lets them stick out both sides of the scabbard and makes them easier to get out.
On another one I traded places with one of the kardas and the awl.
Another thing that sometimes helps is to use a very sharp thin blade and trim an angle in the inside of the individual sheaths where the little tools go. That makes it easier to get them in and often lets them set farther in reduceing risk of loss.

Al it's to bad about your studio, but remember that things ain't over until they're over.
Something may come up before next week.

Very, very pretty. The YCS has over time creeped further and further into my heart, and onto me wish list.
The photos themselves are very professional looking, and worthy of compliment as well.

Uncle,

Basically, my financial backer backed out of our partnership... unfortunately, he hasn't paid any of the bills (or me) since June. I finally got in touch with our equipment lease loan officer and she filled me in on the details. The bank is going to collect all of the equipment next week, so I'll be out of commission for photos for a bit.

I'm looking at this as a good thing. This deal with my partner has really been a bad relationship from the beginning. He backed out after only six months because I wasn't making enough money with the studio to suit him. Then it was a fight to get paid all year long. I'll be relieved to have the bank take the equipment. It saves me the trouble of having to sell it myself. I can always get new equipment. I'll still be a photographer after what I have is gone... just on vacation :). And I found out that I've been hired by the newspaper that I've been freelancing for this afternoon. It is just a part time sports copy desk position, BUT I get an additional 10 hours to shoot for the paper, and it is a great foot in the door position for the future. I won't be rolling in the money, but I'll at least be working :) .

Once I get set back up, I'd be happy to shoot the photos for the site. It would be a ton of fun, AND I'd get to see all the new khuks :D

Yvsa, I was looking at the arrangement this afternoon. I think that switching the kardas back to back might just work. I'll look at shaving off some of the leather to get them in a little further too. The more I handle it, the more I love that design. I have to be careful that Ashley doesn't get jealous though :D .

I had a friend who was a wise old owl and she used to tell me, "partnership is the worst ship in the world." Anybody agree besides me?

You've got the right attitude, Al. Just keep on trekking. Sometimes things we view as a curse when they happen turn out to be a blessing farther down the road.

The bad news is today I can't see the pix. Is this just me?

I am now and still very nice pix.

I had to chuckle at the reflection fooling Bro. It does look like the blade cut right into the frog.

HEE, I groaned when I saw that too. Highly reflective objects are the hardest thing in the world to photograph. If I'd had a couple of things I sold, and a lot more time, I would have had a "really" good shot!

Something like this:

Even that photo needed a little more time than I had to play with. But it came out pretty nice.

You've got the job, Al. Official HI Photographer.

You join an elite corp comprised of the likes of Harry, Berk, Rusty, Mohd (who has been falling down on the job), Jim Clifton, Howard, John Powell -- and who have I forgotten?

Great Pic Alan!!!!!!!
I would love to have about 1,000 pounds of Grandfather Rocks like those in the pic, except in a good large cantelope size!!!!
The rocks look almost like those starting to heat up in Atsila, the Sacred Fire of the Cherokee, that is if you could see into the mound of wood stacked around them.;)
Our Grandfathers come into the Lodge as glowing red all over as those close to the red lighting source coming from underneath.
Barb and me need to take another trip to New Mexico, just past the Oklahoma Panhandle Border, over by Cappulean(sp?) an old volcano cone that spit out mega, mega tons of such rocks thousands of years ago. :D

What's kinda interesting is when you drive up around the cone in an ever smaller spiral and then drive down into the mouth of the extinct volcano, get out of your vehicle and walk down to the very center.
There's a sign there explaining how a volcano works and then at the bottom of it there's a detail showing that "you are here" which shows you standing right over the plugged tube that's the primary source of discharge at the beginning of an eruption.
Sure gives one food for thought!!!!:D:D:D:D

By the way, Pretty Balisong!!!!!!!

No fair, why does he get to have all the flair for picture taking. :)

Very nice picture, and I have to agree with Yvsa; very nice balisong.

Jim,

Yep... FHM from Sniperboy over on the bali forum :). Sucker is big too 5" blade... well, big for a balisong at least.

Yvsa,

The volcano would be a very interesting place to visit. I can't imagine the feeling of standing on the source of the eruption  . I was just watching a special on PBS about Pompei...

These were just lava rock bought at the hardware store and a little dry ice (oops, giving away trade secrets :D).
