My first grinder in which I designed and built, this bad boy is sporting a 3horse motor. MAN!! can you lean into a grind with this, best thing is, not including the motor this grinder cost me less than $80 to build with new steel.

Here is a close up of the very simple tracking device.

Man, that is simple, clean and sweet, I like it!
The tracking setup is very cool. Is the upright tube spring loaded internally?
Great design and execution, congratulations!
Regards,
Greg

Nice to see someone paints like I do:D

Now that is my kinda grinder! Can you give us some more specs? Is your contact wheel a lawn mower wheel? Is it smooth running with that tread pattern?

I have often thought about building my own, but my freebie Burr King 760 is doing fine for right now. I just don't like the 2 x 60 belts. I would rather use 2 x 72 so I have more of a choice on belts.

Anyway, great work and any additional info you are willing to give would be great.

Thanks guys, yes the vertical tube has a machine gun spring in it, and the forward horizontal tube has 14" of movement for those times when you find a good deal on some odd ball belts, it is also how I will add the different attachments, just slide out the large contact wheel tube and slip in the flat grinder attachment ( which is not finished yet ) The contact wheel looks like a lawnmower wheel but it runs on bearings, and actually quite smoot although I did turn it on my lathe a bit.

man oh man do you spray paint sloppy....look at that poor contact wheel....:D

Nice grinder, Ron....

hmmmm. I think I got everything but the machine gun spring :D

any dimensions on the spring?

that is a very nice looking grinder. looks like it does a great job. is that one of the integral bolster knives? :D

Great looking grinder, Ron. Very nice (except the paint job!) Your going to like having the versatility it offers instead of trying to do it all with your disk.

Great job, just one thing, you do know what masking tape is dont' you?:D Realy like the tracking adjustment.

LOL...yeah yeah I know I did a crappy job painting it, the main body paint is nice, unfortunately I was too much in a ruch to try it out, that I didn`t care if I sprayed paint on other things, figured hey it`s not going to hurt the performance any right. It does work nicely, and the flat grinding attachment it in the works, turned out two 2" wheels the other day on the lathe, installed the bearings, now I just need to put it together.

Great job, Ron. I believe what you have done above all is to show that a good, solid machine can be built for less than what a person may pay for a Grizzly or a ProCut. A friend of mine has a couple of home builts that he built for under $500 each (including motor and contact wheels) and are just as smooth as a high dollar grinder. It can be done as you have shown, it just takes a little time and patience.
That grinder looks real good!

LOL...yeah yeah I know I did a crappy job painting it

...in my auto body days, we used to call that color "Retail Red"....formulated to dazzle the (young) customer.

LHKnives,
I like the looks of the design. Simple and clean! I have a problem understanding your "vertical tube has a machine gun spring" operation when changing belts.
Envious, Lynn

Wow! didn`t think I`d get compliments like this about my cheapy grinder..lol
The contact wheel is about 6 1/2" and looks like a lawn mower wheel that actually runs bearings.
The up right tubing is 1 1/4" .125 wall inside I believe 1 1/2" .100 wall tubing, and inside the 1 1/2 is a 3/8 rod welded to the frame which runs up the middle the entire length of the 1 1/2 tube, which acts as a spring guide. The Machine gun spring is exactly what it sounds like... a surplus machine gun spring, I have many as they are great replacement springs for most pellet guns. ( when I`m not working on knives or hunting I`m rebuilding or modifing pellet guns ) to schange the belt you simple push down on the upper tube to compress the spring.
Very simple i`d say but sure works great!
