New AG 110 with a little play

Okay, so I just got my first Cabela’s Alaskan Guide 110 in the mail 2 nights ago.

I love it. Love it love it love it. Fantastically made knife and sharp as a laser. The ergonomics and the aesthetics are stellar.

Only problem: There is a small degree of blade play. There is a small degree of side to side motion when the blade is open. It is not very much at all, and I’m sure the degrees of movement can be measured in small decimals, but it’s there. It also moves slightly from side to side when it is closed. I have a standard buck 110 that I purchased several years back that was a beater knife, and I pulled it out and tested the two side by side and the amounts of movement are almost exactly the same. As I got excellent service out of the regular 110 I’m not overly concerned about it with the AG.

The only problem is that it didn’t really bug me too much with the regular 110 as it wasn’t terribly expensive. But the AG did cost me a decent dime so I want to make sure this isn’t something I should be worried about. Should I take it in?

I have four AG 110's and all lock up really solid with no play at all in any direction. If it were me, I'd send it back to Buck and let them fix it. If you don't, there will always be that tiny aggrivation there in the back of your mind.;)

If you intend to use the knife for anything other than really lite work the pinned pivot design will develop some slight movement over time. Nothing at all to worry about in my opinion. Save yourself the shipping and the time the AG will be gone to Idaho and just have fun and use it!!

Seldom happens, but in this case I have to disagree with Flat. If the knife already has some slop in the blade, how much will it have after use? I'd much rather start with a tight blade and let it wear "loose" over time rather than start with one that already has looseness built in.

What!!:D:D:D

Tough call, I agree with Plum and Flat both. Certainly, it will never fail because of a little play now, but if its a prize bull in your herd, you want him to be stellar. Good luck with your decision:)

:p thanks for increasing my indecisiveness guys :)

Well, this is a quality knife but it's not going to be a display queen. Intended purpose is EDC/hunting, so I am leaning towards putting it in to Buck, even tho I have no real desire to see it gone for an extended period of time. How long would it be for me to get it back?

I have a stag AG 110 with the slightest blade play. Here's my approach. It is a user, so I'll wait until it gets dull enough sometime that I won't want to spend the time sharpening it myself, and take advantage of the Buck's AG series free sharpening service. At that time I'll mention to Buck about the blade play.

Hi LTC,

Don't send the knife back to Buck, Send it back to Cablea's and have them send you another knife. If you still have the shipping label/invoice from Cablea's it should have a return label. This will not cost you a shipping charge, if you send it back to Buck it will cost you the shipping fee's. Just my 2 cents take it for what it's worth.
