I love to follow my nose. Out'n the shop that is. I never make such as this but here I am making it. I've not used micarta in forever, I forgot what cool stuff it really is. Very tough! When I first started making knives, like a lot of people, my goal was to make a knife as good as a Randall. Imagine that. Now Randall still makes a great knife in my book and it's hard for anyone to top their grind; no kidding: have a close look at Tom Clinton's table sometime. I've actually been to the Randall factory, (its a frig'n little ol'e house in the middle of a damned orange grove...) and got a nice tour. That's been a dozen years ago but I've always loved their knives and their DESIGNS. This is my take of the Airman they make although my handle config. is better at least I think so. I "blended" the guard and micarta rather that oversizing the guard a bit, undersizing the handle a bit, and having it already finished just prior to glueing so's not to have to "blend" at all. That's how Randall does it. Why not blend??, well, it is expensive. That little trick cost one hour even... or $40.00 bucks; however you want to call it. The flat grind only half way up is cool too: it affords a more rugged edge while retaining some additional weight in the blade. Knives have been made this way for eons but us modern flat grinders who usually grind all the way to the spine forget "thangs" sometimes!! :)

Mitch, do you grind in the false edge after the main bevel or before?

Very nice knife.... :)

Looking very good. Did you clay coat it, it looks like there may be a hamon forming in pic #4? :D I do like that handle.

I grind it last and sorta... slowly, whit a 36 grit and then an 80, then a 320.... Terry, yea it's clay coated. I've learned a trick for getting a hamon in 1084.... "speed"!!!!

ps: I might add this guard is driven on then soldered (in Randall fashion...)..... I intend to pin the tang: Safty first!!

Oh, Mitch? I think I'm in love(with this knife, not you)

PM sent your way. ;) :)

Thats a superb interpretation. Beautifully executed too, like the other knives shown on your website. Clean +++ . Jason.
