I love to follow my nose. Out'n the shop that is. I never make such as this but here I am making it. I've not used micarta in forever, I forgot what cool stuff it really is. Very tough! When I first started making knives, like a lot of people, my goal was to make a knife as good as a Randall. Imagine that. Now Randall still makes a great knife in my book and it's hard for anyone to top their grind; no kidding: have a close look at Tom Clinton's table sometime. I've actually been to the Randall factory, (its a frig'n little ol'e house in the middle of a damned orange grove...) and got a nice tour. That's been a dozen years ago but I've always loved their knives and their DESIGNS. This is my take of the Airman they make although my handle config. is better at least I think so. I "blended" the guard and micarta rather that oversizing the guard a bit, undersizing the handle a bit, and having it already finished just prior to glueing so's not to have to "blend" at all. That's how Randall does it. Why not blend??, well, it is expensive. That little trick cost one hour even... or $40.00 bucks; however you want to call it. The flat grind only half way up is cool too: it affords a more rugged edge while retaining some additional weight in the blade. Knives have been made this way for eons but us modern flat grinders who usually grind all the way to the spine forget "thangs" sometimes!!
