Hi gang,

Thank again for all your advice on a recent thread. My 15" AK arrived today--very impressive. Which leads me directly to several questions:

1) Can someone point m to a good previous thread or URL that gives pointers on sharpening? I gather there are a few details beyond the obvious...

2) What do the two Asian characters mean on the blade, if that is known?

Thank sto all and thanks to Bill for outstanding service!

Letters say HI in Devanagari.

FAQ has more info than you'll want or need re sharpening.

And thanks for report from the field.

Another good link for sharpening convex edges can be found here . Wet-dry sandpaper on a mousepad has worked the best for me. A ceramic rod sharpener can help as well.

Hey there,

I checked out your knife photo thread and your photo.net page--I feel like I really know you! Funny how the web is....I'm in Gaithersburg (well, Derwood, actually). Born in Ohio, of the the Boston area for grad school, then down here to work for the gov...then resigned and back to being an artist again--my first calling before the whole school thing hit. Sort of wish I had your job in a way (I very much wanted to be a palentologist when I was younger--very serious--until I realized that mostly you hung out at at universities, etc. I was hoping for more adventure.).

Nice photo tutorial. Where are you?

I tried the sandpaper/mousepad method in the FAQ. Got the fine grit papers at an auto body shop (thanks to HI forum advice). Excellent results, and easier than I thought. AK is now shave-sharp. And it's cheaper than a bunch of fancy stones.

Hey there,

I.I'm in Gaithersburg (well, Derwood, actually).

Uh-oh! Sounds like a Maryland khukuri cabal is forming. I almost took a job in Gaithersburg - biotech, company called IGEN.

Darin,

I am in Gaithersurg, close to the downtown. I live one mile from work. On a good day I walk. It's ethereal sometimes.

Anyway, your photography work makes me want to beat a path to your door right now! I do a pretty good job, have won some awards, but still have oh-so-much to learn. Funny you said you seem to "know me". When I went through your photos I couldn't help thinking "Now that's exactly how I would want to see it". I love the strong light contrasts and the anthropomorphic-almost-portraituraic studio work.

If you don't mind, I'd like to post a few favorites to share with the others:

breath-taking...

Anyway, (cleaning up drool) I hail from the Great West, went to school in an up-and-coming private art school in the Deep South and have always had my eyes set on living in the North East. The DC area is a great place for me right now. Eventually, I think, I will end up back in the Old West somewhere. Maybe Colorado. But for now, I say "Bring it on! I'm ready!"

:D

Come on over, Erik! You'd be welcome anytime!

IGEN is just a few miles down the street.

I just looked at some of Darin's pictures. Nice and green and wet looking. Very tempting.

But the high, dusty NM desert is very agreeable at present. It's nice to have a mountain in your backyard.

Maybe a visit, though :D

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Eh? Gaithersburg has a downtown? I think they are trying to make THREE downtowns around here--Olde Town, Rio, and Kentlands. i actually had a gallery of my work at the kentlands for a bit last year. Got out before they took all my money. I take it you are in Olde Town?

If you like I can show you some real prints--and you can show me how to sharpen my AK...?

Yes, I am near "Olde Town"...

Gaithersburg is a funny place. I like it. Too much to talk about here, though.

And yes, your offer sounds like a good deal!

I'll bring along a 22" GRS by Bura just to give you a taste... :D
