I have the old AK-47 (alum. handle) and the American Lawman. I'll try to give some overall impressions.
The AL is very similar to the new AK-47; same blade length and thickness (3.5mm); same G-10 handle, and same Tri-Ad lock.
My old-style AK-47 has a slightly thicker blade at 4mm, the Ultra-lock, and a grivory extended pommel. (Or rather, had a grivory pommel. I cut it off flush with the handle, as it really dug into my palm). The new pommel is aluminum, but still quite pointy.
With either AK-47, you get a thumb-plate opener. However, the older version is very angular, and a pocket-ripper. The new version appears to be more radiused--similar to the one on my Spartan.
I have put my AK-47 through hell with handyman projects, and stripping tree limbs to process into canes. It just seems to shrug it off and be ready for more. Resharpens just fine, with no chipping out.
I haven't yet put my Lawman through the same punishment, but that's just due to its "newness." It's a very strong knife, and I think the Tri-Ad lock is superior (it is certainly much smoother).
There's a great video of Andrew Demko showing the strength of the new AK, if it's any help.
