New Alox Model

I'd like to get peoples opinion on an idea I had.

I've been carrying a Soldier for two years now and I find it to be a very hard working tool. There are times though I find myself wishing for a slightly different setup as I don't use the awl very often.

What I would like to see is the Pioneer Apprentice with the screwdriver layer added. I find the sheepsfoot blade to be very handy for precise cutting on a hard surface and overall more useful for me than the awl on a day to day basis. I know the Electrition is similar but I like to have the small flat head and the ability to turn Phillips screws (and open cans).

So am I crazy or is this actually a good idea?

On a side note I would also like to see a metal file produced for the alox range. I think that would be a great addition for the knife described above. I don't have high hopes for this though.

Good luck with your mod design. Personally, I think a lot of thought, field use, and input went into the development of the Soldier. I think they got it right. Your design may suit YOU, but the Soldier suits an army of everybody. Your design has a redundant blade, perhaps wasted space/capability. I use the awl as a rough-use blade or scraper, as well as a hole punch, and a drill (if you twist it, it will drill a perfectly round hole.). It's good for a staple remover. The Soldier is the soul of Victorinox, it's the only model that wears the military Swiss Cross. It is an Icon. It is the knife of a Soldier.

I agree with MoW669 -- as I just wrote in another thread, the Soldier is the ultimate EDC. But if you'd like an Apprentice plus driver/opener layer, there are quite a few folks who customize in that sort of thing. Not cheap, but overall still cheaper than a good Spydie, Benchmade, or the like (and a better, more multi-functional pocket knife). If you go that route, of course, it's advisable to get two done, since it's a real EDC and having a back-up gives peace of mind. :)

I like the idea of the file. That would be cool. Maybe like the Wave where it's diamond on one side and regular on the other. Gotta disagree with getting rid of the awl. When you start thinking of ways you can use it, it's awesome. I use it to cut tape off boxes at work. It saves my blade from getting gunked up with tape glue. Then there's the ability to make leather sheaths with it. Love the awl.

I agree, the Soldier is the soul of Victorinox and the quintessential SAK. I'm not saying get rid of the Soldier (which they have already done) or Pioneer, simply combining the parts they already make into a different configuration. Also, I'm not interested in getting a knife modded. Maybe it would be a good special run from Swissbianco.

I use the awl on my Bushcrafter all the time when I'm in the woods so I'm not knocking the awl, just thought a new configuration would be cool. Diversity is good, that's why there are hundreds of different SAK models not just the Soldier and Spartan (modern equivalent of the original Officers Knife). The can opener is also good for staple removal and tape cutting/ box opening.
